i have a Canon SD600, and honestly I don't think it is a HUGE improvement over my old SD110.
Anyway, last night, I was turning the camera off while it was facing upwards and it made a clicking sound and stopped. the Lens still "extended" and just stuck there. The screen then showed a warning "Lens cannot retract, please turn off and restart." And after a few unsuccessful tries and lens still makes the clicking noise and will not retract.

I checked with canon and the preliminary repair cost is $100. I might as well fork a little more over for a new one. I am eyeing the Canon SD850. Anyone has some other recommendation for an ultra-compact under $200?

What error do you get? If its E18 and within warrenty, send it back to Canon. If not, get the SD800 (Wide angle) or the SD850 (normal view)

have you let it sit with the battery out for a few hours? sometimes that fixes it.

ya, I did, as it happened two nights ago. I even recharged the battery, it just makes the "clicking" sound more pronounced.

I am not sure if it is specifically E18, but when I search Canon's FAQ it seesm to resemble E18. (the error message is "Lens Error, Please restart Camera")

anyway, i also checked with Canon and my SD600 is already out of warranty.

I'd say give it a hurl with a catapult or trebuchet personally, but that's mostly just because hurling is one of my hobbies. :)
