Yes porcelain is fragile. Which is why my dentist had to replace the crown on one of my teeth with gold. It cracked when I bit it. :(

Edit: but porcelain is white like teeth and gold isn't.

That does seem odd. Figured it was some kind of hard plastic or metal or something. Even gold seems like it's too soft for that, should use something like titanium.

My previous dentist somewhat arbitrarily replaced a silver filling with porcelain. He gave two reasons, cosmetics, and silver was supposedly bad for you long term. He wanted to replace them all. The real reason was probably that I had the insurance to cover it. lol Well, the one filling he got to replace cracked not too long after and it ended up splitting the tooth in half! My current dentist said not only is porcelain fragile compared to silver, but the old dentist did a crap job installing it. I've had my silver fillings for over 30 years and never had a problem with them. If I ever need another one, I'm going to demand silver.

Porcelain is semi durable, compared to what you should be biting. It is also white and difficult to stain. Veneers are also incredibly expensive in the US. The cost of being pretty...

Gold is better for back teeth since it's stronger, but porcelain is good for more visible front teeth when you want them to blend in.

Just remember that with porcelain it wears out and you get to pay again except it will be much more the second time.

Most dental gold is only 16k gold. At current gold price of $1,350, typical crown has around $72 worth of gold. If you were to sell that gold to a refiner, you might get 90% since they have to refine that 16k gold to .9999 pure. So that gold dental crown you paid thousands for is really worth about $65 in the secondary market.

'Silver' fillings are not all silver. They are amalgam which contains mercury. Even trace amounts of mercury are not good in the long run.

I don't know how but I managed to avoid fuxxoring my teeth --just cavities -- despite brushing my teeth once a year until I hit high school.
