Weird, this exact situation was one of the examples from my CCW class on Saturday.

Drunk neighbor kid thinks he is sneaking into his own house late at night. As the instructor stated, whether or not charges are filed, how do you think that shooter's oatmeal tastes every morning?

Part A of my post was admittedly hyperbole. I'll restate.

A) The shooter should go to jail for a long time.
B) Guns should be abolished.

All the posters in this thread just fine with people killing kids are fucked in the head.

When getting drunk make sure you get into the correct house. I wonder how his oatmeal taste? probably like dirt?

How do you know the kid wasn't there for nefarious reasons? You don't, so it is what it is.

I imagine when your child is abruptly taken away from your mind would just dwell on all the possible things that could have gone differently. Note in the video they say the father in no way blames the shooter. This obviously is him just wishful thinking, clearly his first wish was that his son didn't go out drinking, or perhaps that he wasn't so hard on his son that he had to sneak through windows to come back late at night.

I can't count how many times people in college ended up in the wrong dorm room or whatever after a night of drinking like retards. Also plenty of stories of people pissing in the wrong room (i.e. wrong turn and end up peeing in someone else's room). The video shows houses that look somewhat similar as well.

It's obviously very possible for some wasted 16 year old to have made the mistake of trying to get into the wrong window.

What the father thinks isnt law. Which is why bringing sandy hook parents in front of congress is absurd. Then again so was bringing MLB players in front of congress. Then again, so is a lot of stuff that they do.

You might be a bigger idiot that that kid. I experimented with alcohol, decided to speed up my research and got enough funding to embark on a really ambitious project to drink all the beer, bourbon and tequila on the east coast. It didn't work, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. And in all that time I never once forgot where my house was and I never once climbed through ANY window let alone one that didn't belong to me. For that matter I've never even seen a person that was capable of walking and climbing being so drunk as to not recognize his own house. That level of incoherence is always accompanied by being curled up in a ball on the floor puking all over yourself.

Kid illegally broke into a home that wasn't his, kid got whacked. Tough shit. My only sympathy lies with the guy who was forced to kill a dangerous intruder.

I'm confused..... I was just discussing a grieving father who has the fortitude and presence of mind to forgive his son's shooter and try to move on. I wasn't discussing law, obviously I don't think any charges should be pressed regardless of how the father took the situation.

Just a terribly unfortunate situation.

I've been so drunk that I couldn't get up the day after until well into the late afternoon and I've never failed to find my way to my own bed.

Warning shot? The neighbor is moron. Nice way to warn the intruder that you're armed and give them time to go for their own gun, if they aren't already holding it. First shot should have been to the intruders chest, second to his head.
