JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri - A 15-year-old Missouri girl pleaded not guilty Tuesday to killing a 9-year-old neighbor girl, who authorities say was slain because the teen wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.Alyssa Bustamante sat silently as an attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf to first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 death of Elizabeth Olten. Bustamante often gazed down — her long bangs covering her eyes, her hands and feet shackled — during a Cole County court hearing that lasted less than a minute.
Authorities say Bustamante plotted Elizabeth's slaying — digging two holes several days in advance — then strangled her without provocation, cut the girl's throat and stabbed her. They say Bustamante led officers to Elizabeth's body in a wooded area near the girls' homes after hundreds of volunteers helped in a two-day search for the missing fourth-grader.

The girls lived several houses apart in St. Martins, a small town just west of Jefferson City.
During a court hearing last month, Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified that Bustamante had confessed to the killing to investigators. "Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like," Rice said.
History of depression
Bustamante was certified last month to stand trial as an adult. Her arraignment Tuesday was necessary because Bustamante did not have an attorney during her initial Nov. 18 hearing, when Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.
The hearing Tuesday also marked the first time that cameras and recorders were allowed in the courtroom for proceedings in the case.
Juvenile justice officials testified last month that Bustamante had been receiving mental health treatment because of a history of depression and had tried to kill herself about two years ago.
Her public defender, Jan King, asked the court to transfer her from jail to a state psychiatric hospital for a four-day evaluation because of depression. But the judge has not ruled on the request, and King said he did not want to take it up for consideration during Tuesday's court appearance.
The judge scheduled a Feb. 16 hearing for an update on Bustamante's case.
I don't give a F how depressed this murderer was and it's too bad she missed when she tried to kill herself.

In my opinion this is a case where the death penalty would be perfectly justifiable.

Your opinion makes me laugh.

Oh how nice, what is your opinion on the matter? Since I'm asking, this is mine. If she murdered a person for no other reason than to see what it feels like, enroll her ass in the military, pack her up, and push her(I mean that literally, open the humv door, toss her a clip, and drive off) into a middle east or Afghan conflict and let her have at it. Otherwise, don't give her a chance to do it again. Life is fragile, what gave her the right to take someone elses? 9 years old, that's it, less than a decade. Gone forever. Never to see another day, because she fuckin felt like it..

where/who the eff are her parents... why dont they have any responsiblity? If a 13 y/o is depressed and killing people by the time they are 15, then what the ff happened at home?
Blame the parents.

mother is a druggie and father is abusive. wich explains a lot.

but yeah this girl should get the chair.

Father is still in prison I think. Shitty family situation is no excuse for murder, though. They're going to throw her in jail for a long, long time. Another article mentioned the sentence for first degree murder would be life in prison w/out possibility for parole, but I'm assuming this is only if they charge her as an adult.

Maybe we should wait for her to enter a plea and stand trial before we crucify her.

the entering of pleas is merely a courtroom dance to try and get a "better sentence".
She has admitted to the murder, but now the pleas are based around specific crimes - so far a not guilty for 1st degree murder, trying to use the angle of mental illness to get that murder described differently, thus bringing a less severe sentence.

It would be much easier to hate her if she was fat. The prosecution should allow her to gain weight. That way execution will be a real possibility. No one cares about fatties.

Thank you. I really wish parents and home life and relatives were investigated far more thoroughly when kids do sick things like this.

I think sociopaths are created by environment not genetics.

Why did she choose the 9 year old girl? Why not go after someone who deserved it instead? Sounds like she was lazy and just went for the easy kill.
