Freak accident kills teen during "pass-out game"

(CBS News) A California teen died after suffering a laceration when he fell on glass while playing the so-called "pass-out game," CBS Los Angeles reported.

Police said the teen and his two friends were watching an Internet video on how to intentionally pass out when he fell onto a glass tumbler that slashed his throat.

The "pass-out game" involves hyperventilating or cutting off oxygen to achieve a type of high.

"The victim was doing what he saw in the video, which ultimately caused him to pass out," said Chula Vista Police Capt. Gary Wedge. "When he passed out, he fell forward, landed on a glass tumbler that was on the floor, and that glass tumbler shattered and then cut his neck."

After regaining consciousness, the teen ran downstairs to get help from his father, but collapsed again, Wedge said.

Law enforcement officials who arrived at the boy's Chula Vista home found him bleeding profusely.

He was transported to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where he died.

This might sound harsh, but I have very little simpathy for this kid, really. This isn't a game, it is just darwin at work.

Heh, I played on a dare when I was a kid. Passed out, didn't die. Getting high certainly wasn't the objective, just the same morbid 5th grade curiosity about shit like "Bloody Mary". To everyones' astonishment, this urban legend actually worked.

Back in middle school in the mid 80s we called this the 'american game'. Who knows who named it that or why.

And yes, we played it at recess. Nobody died, though bumps in the heads are pretty common (we always tried to catch the 'player', but sometimes we missed :colbert:)

Ehhh....I've done so much shit that could have taken just a slight wrong turn, and I could be dead or in jail (for longer than I was).

Everyone here who is judging a dumb move that 99% of the time isn't deadly was most likely extremely nerdy and locked inside their house from ages 8-16.

who the hell leaves a glass tumbler on the floor?

people dumb enough to play this game...

I recently had a buddy hanging out at my house, he'd been working long hours for weeks straight. Asks me for a glass of water, while I'm getting this he passes out, dragging another glass off the counter with him, he landed right next to the broken glass like 3 inches from his neck. I was alll like 😱

we used to play that game. you just hold your own neck until you pass out. you wake up a few min later and it feels like youve been sleeping for days. this is what happens when kids cant get ahold of pot

We played a similar game as a kids. Somebody squeezed my neck until I lost consciousness. When I woke up I had no idea where I was or what I was doing there. VERRY scary, I never did it again.

We just called that hyperventilating when I was a kid. You suck 10 deep breaths while bending over and then your buddy snatches you in the air and as you come down a quick crushing squeeze to the chest puts you right out. Nobody died but the one time I allowed myself to be talked into it I was terrified. Can't understand the appeal.

Edit - actually the sensation is pretty much the same as a whippit so I guess I can see the appeal, although I am not a fan of whippits either.

I played this game with a group of friends in the early 90's. I didn't go for it because I wasn't crazy...I think we were in 5th grade.

Hilarious part of the story, one of the kids we called "Junior", when he came to after being passed out for several seconds he was totally silent and looked dumbfounded.

He said, "I just saw my dad...." He then grabbed a black semi-auto bb gun (looked like a .45) Racked the slide....and then said... "I'm going back."

We were all :awe: and then he got strangled again until he passed out.

I know why kids do it, but trust me, they know what they are doing is dangerous. It's definitely the crazy kids who are doing it.

I guess it's still safer than getting drunk!
At least you don't take out your liver, while taking out your brain.
