The writing was on the wall, and today it was confirmed. Alleva stated he wanted to hire a guy with previous head coaching experience this time around.

Actually, there have been a bunch of firings and a hiring already.

Chan Gailey was just let go from Georgia Tech.
fRan resigned from Texas A&M after their last game and Mike Sherman has already been hired to replace him.
Orgeron is out at Ole Miss.
Houston Nutt was just let go at Arkansas - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3128404
Jeff Bower was fired from Southern Miss

Baylor, Michigan, Colorado State, Nebraska, and SMU also have openings.

Duke football isn't news. If Coach K got fired, that would be news.

He was like what 4-65? How did he manage to last this long?

Not quite that bad, 6-45.

Shame on Duke for not giving Coach Roof the ability and means to recruit the players needed to compete. It's not his fault at all.....unless they change things drastically, nobody will ever win there.

They let Coach K recruit whatever dumbasses he needs to win with, and give them a degree with only 90 hours. Yep, that's right...you can get a degree from the mighty Dook with only 90 hours of classes.
But the football team doesn't get the same rules, nor do they have any facilities worth a crap, therefore not enough good players can be signed.

I thought duke had been coaching by player committee for the last decade or so....who'd a thunk it.

I guess no one remembers the days of Spurrier, conference title(s?), and bowl games? that was a loooong time ago.

That's weird that you would say that cause Duke doesn't run on hours, but rather credits.

Somewhat true...

Duke spent a pretty penny to build a new sports complex for athletes (supposedly for Duke football but now they say it is for all Duke athletes). However...

They interviewed Coach K Saturday night and he said that whatever they decide, they need to do it quickly. "If Roof is allowed to stay then we at the university need to give our full support to building not just a competitive team but a championship team. Because at Duke, we deliver champions." (slightly parphrased)

Basically, if Duke wants to compete at the same level as basketball, then they need to spend almost as much, or more, for a successful coach who creates these teams. But who can they get even with the money? I think just about any coach would love to come to Duke and be known as the one to turn this program around. However, what coach wants to coach in the ACC? The ACC is in sorry shape this year and it won't get better soon. They expanded the ACC just for football (it's killing the old home and home rivalries in basketball) and all the teams across the board have been mediocre with less than stellar schedules.

You're right. They gave Roof the job and expected a miracle on a shoestring budget.

Maybe they might hire Nutt, since he is turning down another year at Arkansas?
