As fun as it may be to make fun of a late-comer to a more civilized reality, I think we should keep in mind that his former methodology was wrong and the one he suggests now is a vast improvement. People can and do change. This present case may or may not be totally sincere, we will have to see with the passage of more time, but it often happens, I think, that in a sick culture like ours, so dismissive of empathetic feelings, dare we say feminine-side feelings, where manhood and the cowboy mentality are worship and emulated by every insecure male, the age of 69 is well into a period of life where ones worship of manhood starts to fail. It's tough to be tough when you're beginning to feel frail and death isn't so far away.
The point I would stress then, is that there are better and worse emotional states. Some attitudes bring happiness to oneself and others, and some bring misery. I think this guy may have an improved outlook. I don't think it a good idea to run down people who move up because the were blind before. Few have no improvements to make in their emotional lives.
