The laptop has been behaving really weird lately, and it wouldnt turn on. Basically, push the power button, and the power light comes on. It just sits there and gets warm. You don't hear the hdd spinning up either. And you see the Toshiba logo on the screen (without the backlight). And its just stuck there. After many tries, and taking out the hdd and putting it back in, I can hear the hdd spinning up, with the usual noise. And I am able to eject the CD ROM--but the screen wont turn on its backlight, neither will it get past the logo.
I am sure this is a hardware problem. I have disconnected every external peripheral (USB mouse, LAN Card) and even the power cord, ran it with battery (100% last time I checked) and no go. I also disconnected the keyboard (yes, ive done a lot of surgeries on this laptop, and after every surgery the laptop worked fine--and its been over a year since the last major surgery), memory modules and switched it around. Still no go
I remember when in Windows, after a few minutes of activity when the screensaver comes on and the screen is supposed to turn off after a while, the screen would just turn fully white and stay like that until you pressed a key. And also, the keyboard would randomly quit working (this keyboard/screen anomaly has been happening for about 2 weeks), but it just got fixed with a restart.
So far, heres what i've come down to:
1.) While the LAN card is in, and you turn the laptop on, the hdd doesnt spin up. If you take it out and reboot, the HDD spins up.
2.) If I take out the CDROM drive, and boot without it, the backlight of the screen comes up, and the first thing that comes up says "IDE #1 Error" and then the "Toshiba: In touch with tomorow" (yeah, more like "Toretard: I'm broken today") logo comes up and just sits there. No disk activity.
3.) Processor side gets extremely hot. Fan does not turn on. I tried with an older replacement HSF module, and the fan doesnt work on that either.
4.) Tried to hook up the external floppy (its swappapble so you can put floppy or cdrom in the module bay), and I still get "IDE #1 Error."
5.) CDROM and the Floppy (when inserted in the modular bay) gets power.
6.) Laptop beeps when screen is closed (usual...)
7.) Lag in starting up the HDD, after you press the power button, it takes about 3-5 seconds for the HDD to start (which is not normal).
I took apart the laptop once again (just the top-screen layer part) and put it back together. No go. I have also removed the CMOS battery numerous times and tried different procedures to try to reset the CMOS.
Specs:
Toshiba Tecra 8100
Originally 450MHz Pentium III, now a 700Mhz PIII
128MB SDRAM100
6GB IBM HDD
S3 Virge (i guess MX or something) some crappy POS video card.
Summary:
Laptop does not turn on.
Removed all peripherals/external mouse.
It does get power.
When CDROM drive is attached there is no backlight. Stuck at Toshiba logo.
When CDROM drive is not attached, there is backlight. Stuck at Toshiba logo.
HDD does not power up with LAN Card.
HDD lags in powering up.
All lights normal.
After pressing power button, 1 long beep and then consecutive short beeps, about 20 of them and then it turns off. Hold the power button for more than 4 seconds and it turns off without beeps.
Can someone please help?
