At 1920x1200, the gtx580 is faster than the hd6990. The gtx570 is only about 10% slower than the hd6990, and is faster than the hd6970 by a few percentage points. The gtx560 also sits nicely between the hd6950 and hd6970. At 2560x1600, the gap is narrowed and even reversed in some cases, but the gtx590 is the only card that can deliver playable frame rates with extreme quality settings.

Looking forward to seeing how much the DX11 patch will stress high end hardware, and if it will widen the gap or bring the two architectures close to parity.

NV did feed them $2M.. they gotta get something for all that cash.

ps. Crysis 2 is a bad bad game. Terrible console port with terrible gameplay.

AMD better get on the ball, and fix crossfire for the most anticipated game in years, geesh :)


While it's become increasingly common to see dual-core processors struggling with modern games, we can't recall the last time dual-core chips suffered as badly as they do in Crysis 2 (perhaps it was with Battlefield: Bad Company 2). Although we only tested CPU performance using the extreme preset, it seems dual-core processors are at a total disadvantage unless they have the capability of running four threads like the Core i3 540.
Crysis 2 may not be exactly what PC gamers expected, but despite the seemingly console-biased launch, Crytek has proven that it's still possible to create an incredibly good looking game with DirectX 9. Many new DX11-based games have shown the advantages of the newer API, but we're no longer convinced Crysis 2 suffers from its lack of DX11 -- something we never expected to say.

What are the sales number for Crysis 2 on PC? I don't think its anywhere near relevant as most ppl already understood its a terrible game. Sold out to consoles.

Guessing this is the game Nvidia focused their entire driver team on. Dragon Age 2 is a mess, but hey - Crysis 2 is working.

That's odd, I saw a review where the hd 6970 was pulling about 60 fps at 1080p on extreme (a lot more than the 6990), and the gtx 580 like 65, or more.

So basically "50%" of reviews say one thing, and the other "50%" says another. Who am I to believe?

What I find most amazing is the GTX285, nearly matching an HD6870 in some of those benchmarks. No doubt the card has legs, but still curious.

This is even crazier, actually:

"Crysis 2 fully utilizes four cores and is seemingly unplayable on dual-core processors. The Phenom II X2 560 averaged just 24fps while the Core 2 Duo E8500 was even slower at 23fps. With the aid of HyperThreading, the Core i3 540 managed an average of 56fps.

The quad-core Phenom II X4 970 matched the performance of the Core i7 920 with an average of 61fps. Meanwhile, the new Sandy Bridge processors that were the most impressive as the Core i7 2600K delivered 79fps when paired with the GeForce GTX 590. Crysis 2 fully utilizes four cores and is seemingly unplayable on dual-core processors."

Does anyone really care how a PC graphics card fares in a failed console port ?
I mean .. might as well bench on GTA IV or stuff like that.

The new normal.

Buy the games that have stickers of your GPU brand at launch. Buy the games that don't have the sticker of your GPU brand at a discount a few months later when your brand finally gets decent driver support.

If you are lucky your brand gets the games you want - otherwise you wait.

DA2, Crysis 2, Shogun TW 2, etc.

It was obvious this would happen if AMD joined NVIDIA "in their excellent devs relations and support to give PC gamers more".

i havent bought a game on launch day in years now. they just dont work right! and by golly i'm not paying 50-60$ to bug test!

The HD6970 is 1-2 frames slower than a GTX570 at high resolutions... Same for HD6950 vs GTX560... If this is much for you the other recent reversed situation was probably incomprehensible for you! :awe:

And obviously CF scaling sucks for now. My guess it that AMD didn't get the game code early as it's a heavily sponsored TWIMTBP game. I'm sure in a CAP profile update or two things will go back to normal for the HD6990.

Between running like crap on anything but quad cores and only running well on NVIDIA cards, Crytek once again alienated most of the PC market. Only now, instead of having the rightful claim that they made the best looking game ever seen (a la Crysis 1), they have jack. They'll probably still complain about piracy. Kyle was dead on - they sold out.

Newsflash ! Yes they do. Thats almost all that is shipping now. There are good console ports and bad console ports.
Consoles don't have quad cores, and C2 seems to scale with different hardware well.

I reckon Shogun 2 has better graphics than Crysis 2 and much better gameplay to boot. Least PC still has our niche gems.

I haven't played Shogun 2, so I can't just "reckon" about it's gameplay, but I have been playing Crysis 2 and it's gameplay is excellent. In other words, it's fun to play. Really Challenging if you set the diff to "Delta".

Not too shocking seeing as Nvidia spent a lot of money on this game. But, even at 1920x1200 and extreme quality it would appear 5850's are still quite playable.

I haven't played DA2 much, but it did at least get me to start playing DAO again. One review of DA2 had a good point: DAO was written for PC and felt a bit forced on consoles, DA2 was written for consoles so feels a bit forced on PC.

Doesn't Dragon Age 2 support DX11 ? I have read that it does, but haven't installed yet. Or read the box for that matter to see if it does or is even listed.

I dont think Origins does though. And another thing, does either of these two games support Tessellation ? Once again, I have read that DA2 does, but cant find anything on Origins.
