[techradar] AMD on the PS4: We gave it the hardware Nvidia couldn't

Isn't that what 'most' pcs are? Unless he used the term enthusiast.

I think they are more then $250, but the no frills point is probably true.

He is full of it. First of all it is not a PC. It is a specialized gaming device. Secondly very few new PC's are 32 bit, even cheap off the shelf systems. There may be a lot of old 32 bit systems left in use, but I seriously doubt they will be used for gaming.

That is not to say the ps4 will not be a very nice gaming device. I think it will. But hardware wise it is heavily biased toward graphics performance, as it should be. CPU wise it is really quite slow compared to any modern quad core PC, and has none of the general use (productivity) abilities of a PC.

In general, it seems to me that statements from game designers also are given too much unquestioning credibility. Just because someone has designed a game, it doesn't mean they don't have their own biases just like everyone else. I am not trying to minimize game design-- I know it takes a lot of talent, just saying it doesn't make everything they say true or accurate.

Actually, there's probably quite a few out there. There was a long period where people just distrusted 64 bit, the drivers weren't that mature, and companies just shipped the 32 bit OS. I saw absolutely loads of laptops with Core 2 Duos, running Vista 32 bit when they should have been running 64 bit. (I had one myself for a while, before I shoved Win7 64 on it.) I doubt there are many machines still in use for gaming that aren't capable of 64 bit, but they are running a 32 bit OS.

That's great Olikan, I'm sure those people really care about the PS4s graphics advantage given their lack of need for anymore when it's been available for years on their PC already, more if you consider MGPU.

Not sure where he gets his "most PCs are 32-bit" from.
Most gaming PCs are probably 64-bit, not 32-bit.

If you take the Steam hardware survey, it's around 70% 64-bit for Windows out of all systems.
58% of Vista are 64-bit
80% of Win 7 are 64-bit
93% of Win 8 are 64-bit.
He has a vested interest in pushing for the console. Epic guys have been drooling over the potential of new consoles for freaking ages, people. Regardless of what they actually bring, this should be an expected slant, by now, much like watching cable news. Maybe they make more money selling to big publishers making console games, than they do PC?

It's been years since I've bought a 32-bit machine (IE, 32-bit Windows), and the last one was due to it being for someone that still used quite a bit of really old software. The majority of Windows users, though especially gamers, have been getting 64-bit for quite awhile, now. But, that makes the playing field look more even, which is not what they're after. They're after hype, to sell more consoles at launch, because the more launch consoles they sell, the more games will be bought for them, and the less money Sony will lose on them (the first ones will be expensive, even if they make gross profits on them). Also, most games have been coming out, for no good reason, without even being large address aware, which is just stupid, IMO (if DRM doesn't stop you, can mod them after the fact, yourself)--that's the devs being lazy beyond belief, not any fault of user choices.

Latencies between the GPU and CPU are going to be low. The way they've shown they did it, not integrating the CPU/GPU caches, it will take whatever the NB's general access time is. The CPU and GPU can then share memory, without having to go over PCI-e, or any other kind of shared peripheral bus. They've just got to go through the NB.

AMD APUs you can buy can technically do that, too, but then they're saddled with bandwidth limitations, and no software developer in their right mind, without AMD paying them, is going to do that, instead of making a general abstracted interface. However suboptimal that interface might be, and however it may not be useful for more tightly coupled tasks, it will not be work done that only works on certain AMD APUs.

For an analogy, consider those benefits of the unified memory interface in the PS4 to not be dissimilar to those benefits that will be provided by AVX2. The two aren't exactly the same, but AVX2 solves the same sort of problem: a coprocessor on a shared peripheral interface takes too long to communicate with to truly be used in conjunction with the main processor.

So why you bought HD 7970? AMD lunatic... :colbert:
I like good graphics, Mr Nvidia Fanatic:thumbsdown:.But never at the expense of gameplay.I honestly feel some people will play turds if they come with shiny fake 3d and ridiculous looking 'Physics' effects....for example Dark Void,Darkest of Days, and many more.

Graphics come second to me after game play.

While Dark Void may of not received the greatest review score, the added physic effects may of been welcomed for some. Personally enjoyed the turbulence in the title and thought it was neat.

HardOcp did an article on PhysX and DarkVoid and was pretty positive over-all:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/02/03/dark_void_physx_gameplay_performance_iq

Thankfully, there are differing views and why different choices are so welcomed.
EXACTLY....you play these turds of games simply because they have Nvidia's PhysX,don't you?

I rather have a GPU do the PhysX work than let the CPU do it...

Just waiting untill AMD gets their act together (as if ever...) and have GPU physics...then HAIR wil be BIIIIG...oh wait...rofl.

The grapes are sour...but only untill AMD gets GPGPU phsyics...then suddenly anyone running physics on the CPU is a "n00b"...just wait and see 😉

But most PC games are 32bit, negating the larger percentage of gamers using 64bit OS and hardware. Heck most apps are 32bit.

No...but they add icing on the cake..and it seems to make you very bitter :hmm:
There isn't anyone more bitter, arrogant and a Nvidia blowhard than you:awe:.

Icing on a turd game masks the turd ness of a game for a little while until you realize what's underneath.

But you're a fun person to have on the forums.:awe:

I play games for fun.If AMD ever comes up with crap physics implementations on turd games I will call them out on it.

You can quote me on that.

In the meantime we enjoy our Nvidia GPUs. Metro Last Light will also have GPU acc.

Those games appeal not to me.

Enjoy.

In Borderlands, you can off-load the physX to the CPU. I am running a low end i5 and a HD7770 and the game runs fine at 1080p, high settings on the graphics and high physX on the cpu.

The physX looks cool, but it doesnt really change the enjoyment of the game for me though.
