Technology & Smartphones are so awesome

You never really understand how much you use your smartphone until you sit down and actually think about it.

I woke up to my alarm which was my phone playing music off of it.
I plugged my phone into my car and listened to pandora on the way to work.
I played about 4 rounds of scrabble with friends throughout the day.
Drove home, again streaming pandora.
Ran 5 miles and tracked the entire run (including places I slowed down, my average mile, and exactly where I ran) using Nike GPS+
Used my bluetooth headphones during the run while streaming pandora.

All while answering a couple calls, texting some friends and reading my email.

Man, I use my phone a lot.

/Cool Story BRO!

I don't want to pay another $40/month for data and texting. I use maybe twenty minutes a month with my free dumb phone. I usually just leave it in the car because I have no use for it at work or home.

Must be for only shorter runs. 😛

I should pick up some BT headphones though, for my runs. I track my runs on my Garmin, but it'd be nice to stream Pandora.

This. Not that I wouldn't love to be able to do those things the OP lists, but it just isn't worth the higher monthly bill and 2-year contract (the only way I could "afford" a smartphone).

check out virgin mobile. $25/mo no contract.

I said the same thing for years until I got my DroidX. I don't know how I lived without it.
Same here... Went for years with the cheapest phone I could find, on the cheapest pay-as-you-go plan.

Got 4 new LG Optimus' for the family for Christmas, and I've completely fallen in love with it. Time to dump the landline now. 🙂

Hey 6 miles aint too bad! 😛

These are the ones I use:

They have AD2P support and I can even answer calls on them while running. All of the controls are on my right ear.

I am amazed at battery life. I was in telluride snowboarding for 3 days this weekend. I had Phresheez running tracking all my stats on the mountain and I also had the bluetooth headphones playing music all day. At the end of a 7 hours on the mountain (Running GPS & bluetooth headphones) my battery life was still at 50%. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed.

Those headphones have a battery life of about 8 hours. I haven't had them die on me yet, so I cant tell you exactly how long they last.

I already have a Droid, and I wouldn't mind a cheap tablet but refuse to pay another data fee.
And I also expect my phone will still be the main device, and that I likely won't have a desire to lug around a tablet.
Thus, I just purchased a Nook Color today, with the intent of turning it into the tablet it was made to be. Currently in the process of rooting this sucker. Even though it's a 7" tablet versus the beastly 10" variety, I don't expect I'll have much of a desire to lug it around for the purpose of internet usage, at least not taking it out of the range of wi-fi.

And it will still serve as an apt ereader (granted, nowhere close to the battery life of an ePaper/eInk device).

I kept telling myself I would hold out for that NotionInk Adam, but I seriously doubt that will arrive anytime before Fall, and will likely be twice the price (minimum) of the NC. And I could always sell the NC, it's still fairly new.

I'm going to dread wiping and re-rooting whenever BN releases the 2.2 (Froyo) update, but I always dread wiping, even with the ability to backup everything. I dislike the inconvenience of it. 😛
It'd be nice if they release that update soon. Rumored to be this month. And watch, after purchasing and rooting it tonight, they'll push the Froyo update in a day or two.

I'm of a modern generation and I'm still amazed of the things we can do without being physically plugged in. Not long ago remotes were attached to TV's, nowadays we can just use our cellphones to browse the Internet like it's commonplace.

Simply amazing.

I've found using bluetooth outdoors can be problematic, sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. Main problem is that the audio will skip sometimes and I think it does this because when you are indoors or in a vehicle the signal can reflect off the walls but outdoors it can't. Even just a quick trip outdoors to check the mail, etc, if I am in the middle of a podcast on my bluetooth headphones it makes me nervous because the sound will start to skip sometimes.

I am actually a huge fan of smartphone + stereo bluetooth combo, I use it every day to the point where I donated my expensive computer speakers because I just don't use them anymore. I simply find the versatility of the bluetooth headphone are everything I ever wanted in a set of wireless headphones. They have great battery life, I can go a pretty far distance away from the phone, even on different floors easily. I've tried wireless heaphones of the regular RF variety and they were absolute crap and the bluetooth is generally crystal clear.

Also, to those folks who would like a smartphone without the expensive data plan, if you are brave you can try Page Plus who can activate almost any Verizon smartphone except for Blackberries. I personally use a Motorola Droid with a very limited data plan for $29.99 a month, but it works due to using wifi at home and work the majority of the time.

How do those old up under sweat?

I got them for christmas. Used them about 8 times since then. They hold up pretty well so far.

I hiked camelback mountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelback_Mountain) with them and they were soaked in sweat by the end. I never really had a problem with them after that. The earbuds were just wet, nothing went wrong with the sound of the speakers.

I havent had continuous use of them yet, so I would have to give an update in about 3 - 4 months when they have been thru 50+ runs and 5+ days on the mountain

Been there. Wonder how they'll hold up in the Phoenix summer. 😛

just got a samsung fascinate after a few years slumming it with a flip phone... i have to say its pretty awesome. in fact if i were to have one complaint so far its how damned addicting the thing is. last night i ended up skipping a movie id been planning on finishing because i somehow got sucked into the thing for an hour and a half.

I got these for Christmas as well (requested them) and have used them about 10 times so far at the gym while on cardio machines. I've gone through a handful of S9s so was ready to try something else.

My first impression about the sound was that it's just OK, definately not my cup of tea for music but since I use these mostly for listening to movies/shows on my PMP it's not too bad, definately was disappointed compared to the S9-HDs though.

The comfort was also just OK. I'm not a fan of the foam pads they put on them, they tend to irritate my ears which is why I liked the S9s since they were essentially IEMs on a wire. However, the speakers under the pads shift to fit your in whatever position you wear them in so that helps, and I found the actual shape of the JBs pretty nice as well even for my mellon-ish head.

No problems whatsoever connecting to a BT adapter and no skipping or dropping of signal either, though I'm never more than 5 feet away from the transmiter.

The foam pads seem to retain sweat so maybe that helps with keeping moisture out.

Overall I think I will get use to them but I wouldn't go so far to say they are worth the current price tag, and only time will tell if they withstand the sweat.
