"Technology groups are going on the offensive against Hollywood in a bitter dispute over a call for government-mandated copy protection.

A coalition of companies including Apple Computer, Microsoft, Dell Computer, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Intel said Thursday that they had joined together to oppose legislation backed by the movie studios that would allow the U.S. government to set antipiracy standards for PCs and consumer-electronics devices.

...Valenti accused the tech coalition of warmongering.

'The MPAA is trying to reach a mutually agreeable conclusion whose aim it is to stop the thievery of films so that a legitimate digital marketplace can thrive," Valenti said. "We are not the enemy. We are not at war with the IT community. We are hoping that (future) meetings will produce amiable results. Which is why I am shaking my head in wonderment at this million-dollar campaign to deride us.' "

In other words. They want to dictate their own DRM solution and not have the gov't or the RIAA/MPAA dictate it to them.

Nothing to see here, move along.

This is actually.. rather intriguing. Should be interesting to see how things shake out in the next few years with regards to copyright law.

DRM sucks regardless of who is implementing it

Why?

Because it restricts what you can do with the content you buy.

Want to transfer that song from CD to your MP3 player, either you can't or you have to pay extra.
Want to play some computer game that is only available in Japan, can't if you live outside of Japan.

every implementation i've seen so far tries to destroy my right to use a product i pay for so that someone can pat themselves on the back that they're not losing money to people who, most likely, wouldn't have paid for said product to begin with. also, much of the MS DRM proposal seems to do as much as possible to let a select few control as much information as possible with an ability not seen since the dark ages, while not enhancing security (which is what they're claiming)
