Techniques for applying thermal paste

Just wondering if anyone (probably everyone) has specific techniques for applying thermal paste.

While a simple topic, I would really benefit from others experience. I did a quick search and didn't find anything so forgive me if this has been done.

There seem to be a lot on types of paste, fans and heatsinks, but this could really help out some people, including myself. I just feel like I always could do a better job.

My technique.

I apply "dots" in a uniform pattern and then spread into a film as best I can with the tip of the applicator.

Simple and somewhat effective, although I've toyed with the idea of just lumping some in the middle and using the heat sink to spread, as it has a larger surface.

Put it on your cpu and put the heatsink on while twisting it.

I use cermaq with diamond dust mixed in . So I use this method.

Bag a finger and spread thin and evenly

lol,

don't lap your cpu like a noob. Just put a pea size amount on and then secure your heatsink to the MOBO. This is the best way to ensure a tight seal between CPU and heatsink. Twisting your heatsink on the CPU could break this tight bond and lapping the CPU can greatly deform the manufactured flatness of the heatsink

keep in mind it's not the "goo" that cools your CPU, the bond is only used to transfer heat from your CPU to your heatsink.

a credit card got the best spread for me, tried twisting and finger but no go. spread just a thin layer, no need for too much.
