Technique for removing thermal tape to place Arctic Silver on instead

Does anyone know how to get rid of thermal tape to put arctic silver on instead?

Scrape off using a safety razor being careful not to scratch up the surface of the heatsink.

Then rub remaining with soft cloth doused with Acetone.

I'd be very careful with a razor of any kind, I've always just used my fingernail to get the majority off and then nail polish remover to get off the rest

Spoon - the oil on your fingers can get on the heatsink and interfere with heat transfer. BTW, acetone is in nail polish cleaner (not in some of the new ones, though).

Do what j24u said, but you can substitute rubbing alcohol/Goo-Gone for Acetone.

Don't use oil-based cleaners. The oil doesn't evaporate, and sits in the grooves of the base of the heatsink. That could screw heat transfer too.

is the thermal tape you speak of the reddish gum stuff? if it is, just rub the tape that covers the gum. keep rubbing it really hard, and the gum should come clean off with the tape.

I use regular Acetone which I purchase from a hardware store.

If you check the contents of most nail polish removers, you will find stuff like aloe, lanolin, glycerine, gelatin, etc.

These additional ingredients could cause more harm than good when it comes to cleaning heat sinks and cores.

I scrape it off with my fingernails and then wipe it clean with Rubbing Alcohol. One time I even used kerosene or starter fluid. Oil from your fingers? That's why you clean it off with alcohol!

Scrape it off with anything that won't gouge the HS surface.

Then use Carbuerator Cleaner. Works like a charm.
