technical question for the experts

OK,
I seem to have a problem specific to my setup since I added my Voodoo 5 5500..as I havn't read of anyone with the same symptoms:
Tyan S1854, PIII 733, SBLive, 256mb 133 Crucal memory, Voodoo 5 5500.

In D3D games I sometimes get this Fatal Exception notice:
"A fatal exception OE has ourred at 0028:C002EDB4 in VXD VFAT (01) + 00006314"
requires a cold re-boot.
I'm far from an expert in this stuff and am wondering if anyone could make a guess what's causing this. VXD has something to do with a driver (I thought) and the only thing I can think VFAT is referring to is something to do with File Allocation Tables.
There is no file with this name but there is a registry entry in CURRENT USR/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/EXPLORER/DOC FIND SPEC MRU VFAT.vxd value "C".
Kind of a picky question but any ideas appreciated...

Zeph did you do a 'clean' install? In other words did you reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows? I had a similar problem with another video card some time ago because something from the old card was lurking around. Also - sure you thought of this - have you installed the latest drivers and latest DirectX and latest BIOS?

What motherboard chipset is that. If its VIA then don't forget the latest AGP driver (viagart.vxd) version 4.03

A clean reinstall of windows with just your vid card should work wonders also; then add other devices like your soundcard (preferably in the 5th or 6th PCI slot; keep it far away from AGP slot and first PCI slot).

I hate the thought of doing this, but I guess I'll have to take the advice and re-install win98.
Question:
I have a dual-boot setup: Win98 on 1 disk partition c: and Win200 on a slave drive partition d: I am aware that I must re-install all my applications 🙁 but:
Can I simply format my C\Win98 partition and leave the rest alone? Can I install Win98 through Win2000? (I mention this 'cause I had a VERY rough time installing installing Win98 on my clean drive the first time around (several failed attempts).
Any good utilities out there that could "clean" my current Windows up so I can avoid doing this (I do use the Norton registry cleaner but I'm never sure that really works).

Boy, am I ever sorry I didn't just buy another BX motherboard from the start (fool that I am, I just HAD to have the 133fsb and the latest and greatest...well at least the latest).

thanks again for the advice

Zeph, I know the feeling. I too went for the VIA 133A and regret it now. The BX board I have in another computer is trouble free, stable and a joy to use... Sigh.
I am not an expert on W'2000 but from past experience with dual-boot setups I think you will have to start all over again with newly formated hard drive. I personally wouldn't trust any other method. Someone posted the sequence drivers should be installed on this forum a little while ago. I think it was Birddog but a search should find it. Good luck.
