Looks like it will be fast and expensive, personally I like buying into last gen high end. I believe that to be the sweet spot for price/performance.

Warning: Speculation below!

Seems to me the only way $429 makes sense is if NVIDIA is going to "short suit" itself by phasing out the 1070 and 1080. If we acknowledge that the 1070Ti is the result of NVIDIA being able to harvest better yields from the 1070 process, then the same is likely true for the 1080Ti yields from the 1080 process. Rather than waste perfectly good silicon, sell your best selling chip for higher margins and drop the price on your best chip to increase volume. Following this logic is dangerous, though, because it means we'll see the 1080Ti get a price drop to $649 or something in a couple months.

More like I don't see a space for the 1070. $400 for 1920 cores or $430 for 2432 cores? Easy decision.

And also compare it to the 1080. At $430, the 1070 Ti is 95% of a 1080 for about 86% of the price, so it'll easily have the price efficiency going for it. Unless the slower memory bottlenecks it should be quite close to the 1080, unlike the 1070.

Of course, mining could make all MSRP useless anyway as it usually does.

Two thoughts.

1) Mindshare. Seeing Vega 56 > 1070 on charts hurts the brand, even if it isn't hurting sales of the 1070 at this time.

2) It doesn't cost any more to make than the 1070 - it's the same exact chip just less disabled. So $430 MSRP gets them more profit straight up. If the chip is only 5% defective, why cut it 25% to sell it for less as a 1070? Yields probably can't be that bad after 1.5 years, so only 1/20 units being defective should be much more common.

agreed that the 1070 isn't any sort of bargain. if the 1070ti sticks at $430 then its fine. i just don't see that happening.

don't forget that mobile 1070s are the same chip, but with less of a cut down than desktop 1070s, so these chips were previously going into the mobile sector (assuming there was actually a defect that required a small cut).

From my testing with GTX1070 oc memory from 8000 to 9500 resulting in 8-10% perf gain.So even crippled GTX1070 with only 1920sp is bandwidth bottleneck.OC core dont do anything because all aftermarket 1070 already runing at 2Ghz stock(only if core can oc to 2150mhz then it add few %)
The gap is now 25-30% between 1070 and 1080.With 1070TI i think it will be around 12-15% or more.

Probably because there is enough harvested dies to make this product viable, so they can get a few more dollars in their own pocket than selling 1070-binned chips. On top of that, it'll spur sales during the holidays.

Don't think there's any rumours of a 1060ti. There's consumer Volta sometime around next Spring which will be the next big jump. If you can happily wait through to sometime round then its likely worth it, else I dunno.

GTX 1070 MSRP is $379 ($449 for FE), but the cheapest one available is $399 and most are in the $450 range. GTX 1080 is MSRP $499 (price dropped $100 since launch) and you can actually buy them for $499 with many in the $550 range.

If the cards were all MSRP in reality, I would agree with you, but the line between 1070 and 1080 cards is ~$100. A $429 MSRP for a 1070Ti would actually be a better value.

Actually there was a new msrp for the 1070 and 1080 gtx lineup a while back when the 1080 and 1060 ' s were shipping with faster memory.
The 1070' s new msrp is $349 and the fe is $379 I believe.

5% slower at stock than your OC card isn't really a nail in the coffin, is it? No doubt it should have the newest GDDR5X though, that seems like a dumb move.

Not dumb; cheap. Same reason it doesn't have 9Gbps like optional 1060 and 1080 cards have. It's simply a way to charge a bit more for the same chip otherwise (if it were further cut to GTX 1070).

So, I was thinking about one of these as a better pairing than my 1060 with my monitor (I had bought the 1060 first). Newegg has their presale orders up now, and the prices are ridiculous IMO:

Gigabyte $489
Asus Strix $509

I love my 1060 strix, but at $509, who in the world is buying one of these? Why not just pickup a 1080?

Also as an aside, is there not a forum link on the main Anandtech page anymore? I accidentally went there instead, and figured Id just click the link. Didn't see one.
