Hi, I am new to AnandTech. And well, have read many a thread cursing the Dell's Indian Tech Support, etc etc.

I know that jobs are migrating to India, but let me tell you why.
I am from India, and well, hate the Indian tech support myself, but thats another story.

But heres a small fact, do you know why Tech support is moving to India?

Around 300$ per month, for 8 hrs daily, 5 days a week. Thats why.

Thats how much an Indian gets paid to work in a call centre. Yes... thats it! And I am being very optimistic here!
No wonder its financially feasable for the companies to shift here.

And remember that son of a b$tch who calls you up at 10 in the morning to sell stuff over the phone? That moron is actually working in an office at 12 midnight, for 100 $ a month.
Work timings.... 10:30 PM to 6:00 AM

Your comments?

No one wonders why they do it. We know that all the companies care about is their own dollar even if they have to sacrifice quality of service for it.

guys... I say this is just signs that the world is coming closer together. And America wants to isolate itself again. If american employees cannot compete in the market, they should give up. Or get another job.....

so.. are we supposed to be happy for the Indians doing tech support?

Other than the somewhat hard-to-understand accent, I don't really mind their tech support. I still get the occasional tech support idiot who knows how to do nothing, though.. .but I got those even when everyone in tech support wasn't Indian.

An accent isn't hard to put up with, IMO. I just hate when it's so thick that basic communication is lost.

Seriously, at some point of time that should stop being a joke :) If one can get comparable amenities, comforts, entertainment, security, healthcare, education with a much more manageable cost of living, there should be no reason why one shouldn't consdier migration - not necessarily to India, but any place in the world that can offer it.

Look at it objectively - I had more education and more skills than most of my compatriots so I got to move to a place that offered a better life-style, though at a higher cost of living. If an American is less educated and/or less skilled, it makes perfect sense for them to give up some of the goodies and go to a place where things are more affordable for them...and perhaps come back once they move a little further up the ladder. I don't see anything wrong or strange about that.

No malice intended to anyone :) All purely IMO.

EDIT: Yeah, plenty of Indians that are more educated and more skilled than me chose to stay back and are doing much better than I am. That's not the point here, though. If you find you are not sufficiently equipped in your current environment, either equip yourself better to stay there or move to a different environment where your abilities fit in better.

They should burn down Banglore..

75% of my friends have lost their jobs do to outsourcing.

Maybe Pakistan might let a bomb slip and take out some of the companys support centers. Just make sure the buildings are empty, I dont want to see anyone get hurt.

I was talking to a dell desk person the other day, had the thickest indian accent I had ever heard; long story short, I said I didnt want to try to talk to him anymore and that could I please speak w/ someone who spoke english. I then asked him what his name was, his answer: WAYNE!!!

wtf.

I bet they are given english names by their bosses so that people wont get too upset at Habib.

Don't hate the Indian Tech Support, hate the Companies that outsource the Tech Support to India. Of course this is all consumer driven. With the downturn in new PC sales companies like Dell have to cut costs somewhere to be able to afford to sell their Sysytems so cheap. The result is lost Jobs in the US but continued profit for Dell.

Blame it all on Rossman for buying so many of those Dell Sysytems on the cheap!

American employees can't compete in the market because the cost of living here is more than India or Mexico. We simply can't work for the wages they offer, or we would starve. $300 / month won't even pay rent on a loft.

I bet you understand Apu of 'The Simpsons' just fine :) It's not always the accent - they don't use the right phrases and their grammar is usually sub-par. I'm sure the accent will get better with time and with all you American folks yelling over the phone, I'm sure they'll learn the cuss words too :p

And don't wait for Pakistan to drop a nuke on India. Their missiles came with instruction manuals written in Korean - they're still trying to figure out if the images are directions for loading warheads or wearing condoms :p

The quality of Dell's tech support is poor, but that wouldn't matter so much if they built their computers right to begin with. Crappy plastic everywhere, lousy QC, cheapest components available. They used to make great stuff and their support was at least decent, but now all they care about is the bottom line - and it shows in everything they do.

It'll be interesting to see how cheap Dell can build them in a few years, when most Americans are unemployed and the customer base in India only makes $300 a month.

Abhi ... sorry to butt in to your thread since everyone seems to be having so much fun bitching about Dell or India or both... but what exactly is your point ????
It's not exactly news to anyone that companies move jobs to India so they can take advantage of lower wages ...
