Depression is weird like that. What appears to be success to the outside world does not matter really. Just look at the countless actors/musicians who have OD'd on drugs, suicide, and other depression related problems.

I wouldn't put it past them. The RIAA is the scum of the earth. I think the only thing that could be scummier is Bin Laden.

If it was truly a conspiracy, the conspirators could have picked a better target (i.e. the lead developers of any of the modern gnutella clients, and particularly the open-source Gnucleus). While Gene Kan was a spokesman for gnutella during the early days shortly after Justin Frankel was forced to stop development, I don't recall him doing much other than being a spokesman. I could be wrong about this, it may be possible that he was an active developer, and if someone here is an active member of the Gnutella Developer Forum, they could probably confirm whether that's the case.

Either way, it is sad to hear. My guess is that the guy had personal problems.

As far as I know, Justin and the boys at Nullsoft made Gnutella. Nullsoft sold out to AOL, and around the time Napster was in its big legal battles, AOL told Nullsoft to stop development of Gnutella. At that time, Nullsoft then made Guntella open source.


As far as this Kan guy goes.. I've never heard of him, but it looks like he stepped up and 'took over' Gnutella AFTER nullsoft was ordered to dump it.

while im pretty sure they arent directly responsible for this, im sure no one at riaa is going to be mourning for very long.

I think so too. The only reason they didn't hit Frankel or the Napster guy is because they already had a lot of press coverage.
