"tearing"... what?

So I see people complaining about vsync off causing tearing and such... but I have to say I honestly haven't seen it in anything but Gears of War. Gears of War it's really bad - every time I move the camera.

But everything else, even when I'm pushing 100+ fps, I never notice the screen tearing that everyone talks about. UT3, Bioshock, Crysis (probably can't get enough fps to cause it >_>), Portal, WoW, even UT99... which I know I'm pushing hundreds of hundreds of FPS into.

Why is this such a huge issue for people if it is so isolated to certain games?

I never really noticed it either and I leave Vsnync disabled most of the time (Dell 2001FP (phillips 8-bit panel) monitor with 16ms response time)

I see it in WoW, Mass Effect, and TF2 (just playing WoW and TF2 atm though)

enabling v-sync is usually a whole lot more annoying to me though

in WoW, it's only certain areas were tearing is noticeable

My 8800GTX tares really badly. I never noticed such bad tarring on my X1800XT, but i did change my monitor the same time i bought my 8800GTX. Although both monitors was 60Hz with similar response times but with different types of panel (IPS to P-MVA). Can't really prove its the monitor or video card though.

I usually don't see tearing either when I have vsync off. I usually run Vsync on though because I have no need for higher then 60fps.

COD4, Mass Effect, WoW.

I've noticed that tearing mainly occurs when your FPS hover around your screen refresh rate. This is why the above poster said it was worst in DOOM3. DOOM3 is capped at 60 FPS, so the FPS will always hover around your 60hz refresh rate.

I have another game where I play with 90 fps constant, and I don't notice any tearing.

I see it in all of my games when V Sync is off. I always keep V Sync on because I hate tearing.

yeah, Vsync on causes such ludicrous input lag in most of the games I play, I never turn it on.

VI3L, all that really is is you saying "LCD's suck, GO CRT!".

Mass Effect with Ultra High textures -- very noticeable in dialog scenes.

I rarely ever see it, and if I do notice it, I forget about it soon after and don't notice it anymore.
Even in TF2 with no vsync at 100 fps.

I see it in just about any game and at any refresh rate. It doesn't necessarily disappear at refresh rates higher than the framerate, just becomes less common.

It is most prominent in places with bright, vertical stripes of lighted areas in an otherwise dark room, especially with a slow and steady panning motion. These kinds of situations are very common in the Splinter Cell games, for example. Another place I can think of is in Mass Effect, with the lights around the doors in your ship.

Only time I've ever seen "tearing" when I push my new g/c to its knee due to excessive o/c'ing for testing its o/c limit.
Otherwise I've very rarely seen it.
I turn Vsync 'on' whenever the game setting let me too.
