Started a new thread as the old one was large and potentially hard to read by all....

Thanks to all who have joined and a warm welcome as well...but we need more....

DSLR has their big producer back (about the power of 700 PC's or so)...and he's helping them pull away. Can the AnandTech faithful...with all the members...and all the PC's let this happen.....

I hope not! :Q Please Join..

***Notice to all those who have joined and are using the CLI and SETIDriver....Please make sure to add the shortcut to the STARTUP folder to insure that it will RESTART if your PC is restarted**

Race stats.....click me!

Previous thread info...

Hello all.....

It's that time again....we have been challenged to a new race with DSL Team Starfire...

The last race was a great growing experience for both teams but was ended just short of completion because of the sad day of September 11th.

Since then though, team DSL Starfire has outgrown and outproduced us considerably.....now it's our turn!!! :Q:Q:Q

A new race has started and we need your support.....all it takes is a few extra cpu cycles...just a few. The clients use spare CPU cycles in the search for signals and other signs from space for intelligent life or anomolies. They are easy to use, have little (mostly NO) impact on your system (even in benchmarks) and also help science too :)

Come on over to the DC forum and see what TeAm AnandTech is all about...you'll be glad you did!!! :D

Race Rules thread! :)

Race Start Thread (with stats links)

What team DSL Team Starfire thinks of AnandTech! :Q

TeAm Welcome thread with client information and setup links :)

Come on guys...put that new PC to work....support this great site and a great TeAm...

Team AnandTech needs your help.......please answer the call and defeat the DSL team...you'll be glad you did! :D

Team AnandTech Strikes back! :Q Buwhahahaha!

Ok people, this is it - we just passed IBM today and Microsoft and Intel are in our sights.

This is more than an attempt to get new members for the race against DSL Reports - We need to BEAT Microsoft and Intel too!!!

Please join up TeAm Anandtech Seti and help us in the DSLR race and help us blow the doors off of Microsoft and Intel!!!

I contribute to Anandtech by visiting the site, clicking on their ads and participating in the forums...not by running up my electric bill and wasting resources on inane alien hunting or "DNA folding" flibberdyflam. And if I were to cross-post this sort of drivel in all the forums it would be locked and I would be banned. Why don't you just pick one forum and post in it so that we are all not abused with having to look at it multiple times every day?

I joined. My pc is up all the time anyway, and as long as you turn off the monitor when not in use, your electrical bills will not go through the roof. I think this is a worthy project, and one that can have great unmeasurable scientific value. And all you do is nothing, the PC does all the work!

Medic: Anytime. Here's another for ya.

Cmsanto: That is a myth. There was an in-depth article a while back quantifying the amount of electricity spent by maxing out your CPU usage and it was far from insignificant. I can't remember the exact numbers so I wont post them but i do remember it was in the ballpark of $50+ a month running 24/7.

Secondly, I am a physician involved in the basic sciences and biochemistry and i can tell you with certainty that the

<< great unmeasurable scientific value >>

comment is complete and utter nonsense...at least as far as the "protein folding" is concerned. No one in the real scientific community acknowledges, uses, discusses or in any way validates this garbage. Its just a way people entertain themselves and trick people (LIKE YOU) into wasting their time and money for no good reason.

Ok I've said my piece...if you enjoy it, have fun. I'll leave everyone alone now.

Firstly I know virtually nothing of folding @ home ,I only speak of SETI@home which is the project being promoted here

not by running up my electric bill and wasting resources on inane alien hunting

You will only increase you bill moderatleyIF you run your PC for additional time to your normal use.
There is nothing to stop you (or anyone else) running SETI during your normal useage ,eg surfing ,burning CD's ,writing articles/letters etc. This will make almost no difference to your electricity bill under these circumstances

Why don't you just pick one forum and post in it so that we are all not abused with having to look at it multiple times every day?

The whole point of posting at multiple forums is to grab as many new members as possible ,it is not possible to do this by posting in 1 forum
And frankly saying you're being abused by having to look at a title of 1 thread is a joke!:p

btw cmsanto was talking about SETI :p
SETI does have scientific value :)

Your $50+/mth for a PC running 24/7 100% cpu load is quite a bit over the average amount used! ,naturally it depends upon which state or country you are in but it is generally less than that.A PC under full load uses about 100-120 watts. This has been measured by a handful of members in TA
For me in the UK it works out to about £7/mth for 1 PC

Oh yes
Welcome in advance :D

When I first moved into my house I had no computers running at all. Now I have three on full time 24/7 along with Tivo and a bunch of other things: printers, scanners, etc. I can tell you my electric bill has not increased $50, or $150. In fact the only real increase I see is the electric company raising rates. The amount of electricity is so negligible running these electronics I cannot track any usuage in my electric bill.

Some links are needed here for your statements about PC power use.

Also, as was mentioned, SETI at home is a valid scientific project.

Bump...we need your help still....holding steady right now..but they could explode on us! We're behind and YOU could be the difference! Please help and join....you'll enjoy it! ;)

As far as electricity usage...even if your PC used the full 300+ watts of the power supply (which it won't), 300 x 24 = 7200 Watts per day.....and depending on where you are, 7.2KW per day at (whatever cost) 4 cents for me = .28 cents per day * 30 days = less than 9 dollars per month. In the winter, that $9 comes off the heating bill as it's mostly heat generated anyway...of course summer, the opposite happens. But $50.00 per month would take alot of PC's running at 100% full load (monitors not included as most are off at night and when not in use)....

Welcome new members....Great to be on the TeAm with you! :D

That's the beauty of these type programs. You're NOT wasting resources. In fact, you're using resources that would have been wasted otherwise. Unless you're playing a heavy 3D game or something, your computer spends 99% of it's time waiting for you to do something. Now, that 99% of the time isn't lost in the void, but actually does something useful.

That being said, I don't run the SETI client on my computer anymore. Instead, I run the Folding@Home client, because I believe it has a higher chance of finding something useful as a result my CPU cycles have a higher chance of helping humanity.

DSLR main producer dumped about 350 PC's worth of SETI today....one man....one man....are you going to let one man beat AnandTech Pride?

Yes, they have 400 more members than TeAm AnandTech..but consider that they have 55,000+ forum members vs 80,000+ for AnandTech......please take a look and join. Thanks for your support....you'll be glad you did! :)
