<< You know.. has anyone done any reports on how much this SETI@home/distributed computing actually helps? To do this you need to leave your system on all day and night running at full processing.. how much extra electricity does that burn (compared to not being under full usage.. or not on at all?) Does a little bit of number crunching in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence or.. whatever.. justify not only the electrical bill but the blatant waste of energy?

I don't want to be a punk.. but I'm really interested to know if it's even remotely 'worth' it.
>>

Just run your computer like you always do. You don't have to leave it on if you don't want to. Or, better yet..just turn the monitor off. They're what eat all the power anyway. Computers don't draw squat..

very little extra power is used if you run this and use your computer like your normally do. you do not need to keep your computer on to run seti@home. most of the SETI guys do to get the WU but you dont HAVE to...

BTW its a hot deal if your computer find the alien signal. Press, money, fame! sounds damn hot to me...

Why not put your extra computational cycles to better use? Do something for molecular biology research by installing Folding@Home You could help to find a cure for diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, CJD (Mad Cow disease) and even many cancers. More info

Jason has a good point...if you don't find SETI to your liking, please check out the other DC projects available...you may find one that not only suits you, but also helps out in a very usefull way! :)

(Oh, but the RACE is SO MUCH FUN! :D)

I ditched my old team Maximum Pc and just joined Team Anandtech!
I had 2200 work units with them, but I think I have to start over here in Team Anandtech :)

Welcome to the TeAm, ShotgunSi! Make sure to drop by the DC forum! :)

Baaka: A WU is a small data packet which the SETI@Home (S@H) client downloads from the S@H website. The data it contains comes from the Arecibo radio telescope. The S@H client is looking through this data for radio signals which could possibly come from ET. S@H tracks the results sent in by each person. People often form or join teams. Our team, Team Anandtech, is currently in a race with the DSL Reports team to see who can produce 100,000 WUs in the shortest period of time. This just means that everyone needs to get as many and as fast computers working for them as possible to outproduce the other.

As one of the first to sign up for seti@home let me say this is a GOOD THING! WHITE HOT BURNING STAR SUPER NOVA HOT DEAL!!! ;);)

Please consider giving a little back to AnandTech by donating spare cpu cycles.

You might find that it is such a joy to belong to the TeAm and you may get so much happy tech support and you may find that you simply can not live without the STATS and comraderie that you might just find yourself spending more time in the Distributed Computing Forum than you do in any other place online.

Come on, give it a chance! Besides we really do need your help right now in the RACE between AnandTech and DSLR!!!

So how is this a HOT DEAL?? You join up and give your spare cpu cycles and you get: Friendships, Support, Stats, Education, a new reason for getting up every day and more!

I never knew what was seti was until I saw a thread about the race in one of the forums and quickly joined up a few days ago (sommy911). Please don't thread crap, there are many lurkers like me who rarely check out the other forums and have no idea about seti.

Welcome aboard Domination :D

Stop by the DC forum and say hi :)

One other thing to tell people is that in DC we usually give DC members first crack at the hot deals we do FS/FT.

Just something to keep in mind :D

Hate to sound like an ass, but why SETI@home? In my opinion there are several more worthwhile projects out there, like folding@home, especially considering the MASSIVE user base seti@home already has.

-Chu, unfortunately already a member of team

Edit: Hrmm . . . looks like the forum software doesn't like the HardOCP logo. A conspiracy maybe? ;)
