Well, with the sudden switch to OGR, it looks like our herds and the PhF were caught, giving the DPCs the advantage.:( For the day, we did 828K blocks, 199K less than the DPCs, and 346K more than /. As I've stated above, this is obviously due to the OGR change, in which among other people, the PhF lost 5/6 his power. However, with the release of the new pproxy software, this could quickly change, as many people(including the PhF) are using pre-460 software(which will autoswtich back with the new pproxy), or are manually switching back to RC5. So, tomorrow and Sunday will be the determining days to see if we can get our first place spot back. However, I say forget waiting, and just flaten everyone the old fashioned way, assimilation!:) Everyone get out there tomorrow and assimilate all the machines you can, because TA will get back our 1st place spot!:D

Little correction : this should be pre-459.

ViRGE,

Let me make sure I understand this correctly, because it could mean 750,000 blocks a month we either continue getting for the team, or lose permanently.

If no changes are made in an older client; in other words the ini still gives priority to OGR, will it now get back to cracking RC5 instead of just vaporizing all the work?

TA Cube LOST (not went to OGR) 25,000 blocks yesterday because of this change, and Two may just say screw this and dump it. It is VERY expensive for him to have his people make the change on all the machines.

Russ, if 2 installed pre-460 clients, then once they contact an updated pproxy(either Dnet's or if you have one, yours), then they'll go back to RC5. However, if they're 460 or later, then the situation becomes a little more hairy. The easy solution is to configure the pproxy(s) that feeds his herds(if you don't have a pproxy, shame on you;)) to tell the clients that OGR is closed, and they'll start RC5 again. However, if that's not the case, then he has 2 more options, use Remote Cows to update the clients(assuming he has access and the machines are NT), or manually update by hand(which by the sounds of it, is what he's doing). So, ask two what he installed. If you're lucky, he'll be using pre-460 clients, and the most you'll have to do is upgrade pproxies(if you have one).:)

PS wildhagen, only 460 and above are accepted for OGR, so even though there's no 459 clients around, I'm just saying pre-460 for simplicity's sake ;)

ViRGE,

I don't know if his people setup pproxies at the labs or not. But, you have to understand that these labs are contract managed because most of the time they're idle. When work does need to be done the guys that work for him are consultants, and are called in at $215 PER HOUR.

The point is, that if any changes have to be made, he is not in the mood to feel obligated to do so. RC5 has been running since long before OGR was conceived and his point is; why the hell did OGR have automatic priority? His point is a good one.

Anyway, even if he did see fit to fix the problem, nothing could be done until Monday, so I guess we'll just wait and see.

Russ, if you lost 25,000 blocks yesterday, then you must be running an older client. If you do nothing, the clients will get back to crunching RC5 within a few days.

If, and only if, you had gotten any OGR blocks, which I don't think you did, you would have had to update those clients. As it is, if Two ever has a chance, one of you should make a proxy and he should point any computers he happens upon to it. But no rush. :)

Ken_g6,

That's unless his people setup a pproxy. Knowing the level of expertise that they possess, and the fact that the labs are behind a firewall, I can only assume that they did.

Gee, guess that comes as no surprise. OGR suppended indefinitely my a$$! This whole thing is a bunch of #$%^!:| A bunch of people wanting to do OGR must be in charge of quite a bit of this, or else nothing like this would have happend! I ignored OGR simply because it was said to be suppended indefinitely. Wouldn't have mattered since the next setting won't let you delete the OGR line and is set to 20 as a default! To top it all off the client doesn't do what it claims because I had RC5 listed first in some and it still did OGR!:|

I'm new to RC5, and untill a couple days ago I was as addicted as they come. I really feel like blowing it all off now. I'm trying to get past it and find my burn again, but hey, what can I say?:(:(:(

MWalkden, unless OGR is disabled by adding "=0" to the end, your client will start cracking OGR as soon as it finishes its RC5 blocks supply.:(

<<Add the following to the ini:

[misc]
project-priority=RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0

It will eliminate any possibility of these other things stepping on RC5.>>
I stole this from Russ out of my thread 5 pages back.

I did this and am happy to be only cracking RC-5 for the time being.Lets get back to beating /. and now the DPC.

Thanks guys,:) I did that within hours of the original problem on the home herd. It took me most of the next day to get the rest of my herd done.

I'm a little weary of it because I just spent 2 weeks busting my butt to be in the top 15 on the weeklies. It is a real turn off that so little consideration was givin about this whole OGR thing. Additionally, every time I turn aroud something isn't working for some reason. Being fairly new to it all, I keep telling myself this must be normal, everyone else is just used to it. It doesn't make sense though.

Hmmmmm, with this many people involved and this much problem, something else is going on. An orginization with as many people doing something for it as Dnet should already know what it needs to do for its people. It did not do the right thing, and I find that very distasteful! In addition, AnandTech team did not either. In fact, I haven't seen a single post about it from Anand. Only Virge has tried to sholder some of the responsibility. Talk about feeling like a 'red headed step child'! (sorry if I offend any such folk).

In response to: "I haven't seen a single post about it from Anand"

Anandtech is the banner under which we as a team unite, but Anand personally is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the team. He has supported the team in the past with hardware donations and front page exposure but is not an active participant. He doesn't really have any type of leadership role within the team--he's more of a figurehead. That's fine with me--he has plenty of other things to do than worry about the trials and tribulations of TA.
