I have requested that our friendly neighborhood Mod re-stick our TeAm Public Queue thread once again.

As before, let me know about any changes here and I will edit to reflect them.

Some newbies have asked what the point of a queue is and I'll quote what I wrote later in this thread:

Over the past couple months, SETI has undergone either severe bandwidth restrictions (meaning that client machines had difficulty connecting directly to get new WUs) or outright outages (no one could connect).

Programs like Setiqueue allow users to "save for a rainy day" and have some extra WUs stored up in case no one can get new work from SETI. That way, the machine never goes idle. Meanwhile, the queue will do all the uploading and downloading of WUs for your machines.

It serves multiple purposes in that it can act as a server for alot of machines and is helpful for those behind restrictive firewalls (where the internal machines don't have outside internet access to SETI). It also allows some modicum of stats, where you can monitor how you're doing (especially when the SETI stats are down).

Remember, the aim is to not overload 1 or 2 queues to the point where they'll never be able to upload all the results and download new ones within a 24 hour period. I and others can try to monitor the situation and update the TeAm queue statuses.

NOTE - IF YOU WANT TO USE A QUEUE FOR THE FIRST TIME, PLEASE PM THE QUEUE OPERATOR FIRST. THAT PERSON WILL THEN MOVE WUs INTO YOUR NEW SUB-QUEUE AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN THAT PROCESS IS COMPLETE.

Now let's get out there and CRUNCH THOSE WUs!!! MORE MORE MORE!!!!

Here's a list of other TeAm Proxies:

**Information for those wishing to set up their own private or public SetiQueue**

Latest Version: 3.03.2.2b - Installer Version, Executable only (or upgrade)

What's new in this version?

  • Fixed check in new move-fill function
  • Added "RT" to users.htm, queue.htm, clients.htm (results today)
  • Fixed charts off by one day
  • Help.txt drop from Robert
  • Italics RY if falling RPD
  • Added user email field
  • Changed email support to use custom smtp service
  • Email users for: clients over highlight time, clients that have falling RPD, non-new queus below min levels
  • Email admin for queues below empty
  • Add another decimal to RPD
  • Changed revision checks on VLAR routing
  • New flash drop from Dirk

Quick Installation Guide

  1. Pick the machine on your network you are going to run SetiQueue on. It should be a machine with a fixed IP address (such as 192.168.0.1).
  2. Installer version: Decompress the downloaded ZIP file into a temporary directory and start Setup
Executable only: Decompress the downloaded ZIP file into the desired SetiQueue directory (such as C:\SetiQueue\)
  3. Start SetiQueue.exe
  4. The default settings will probably work fine, but you might want to check Settings->Queue Server. Here you can alter the TCP/IP port # used by SetiQueue and supply a subnet mask if you want to make sure external people can't access it. (A similar setting is also under Settings->Http Server)

To set up SetiQueue as a service, so that it runs as soon as the computer is turned on, and when no-one is logged on, go to Start->Run, and type in C:\SetiQueue\SetiQueue.exe -i (where C:\SetiQueue is the directory you installed/extracted the SetiQueue files to). Go to the Services Management section, in Administritive Tools, and select the startup type as "Automatic". Make sure the Interact with Desktop is disabled. If this is enabled, then SetiQueue will not work, as when installed as a service, it is not designed to be viewed.
Before starting SetiQueue as service be sure to run the application interactively once and set the port # for the SetiQueue Queue Server, and the HTTP administration password.

Other tips

[*]When starting your SetiQueue, it will not have any Work Units stored. In order for the Queue to download any WUs, it must first make a connection to a client. It is best to download a Work Unit directly from Seti@home with the client, and then let it upload the result through your SetiQueue. This is so that SetiQueue can know which user to download WUs for. This only needs to happen on the very first connection from your UserID.

[*]To be able to access your SetiQueue from external computers, without needing to know your IP address, or if your IP address changed regularly, use a service such as DynDNS, No-IP or another.

[*]If you wish to allow people to connect from outside, set the Subnet Mask under Settings->Queue Server to 0.0.0.0. Setting this to 255.255.255.0 will only allow your internal network to connect.

[*]Processing times: This will tell the SetiQueue between which times it can connect, and do all the uploading of results, and downloading of new units. This is particularly useful if you are on a business network (with written permission to run Seti, of course) and you want to get it to use the internet only at night, when no one else is around, so set the Processing Times to say 12:00 to 03:00. To get it to connect as soon as it recieves a result, set the Processing Times to something like 01:00 to 12:59, or any values close together

How do I get it to go through another SetiQueue? (Or: How Do I Get Even More...More...More! Stats ;))
[*]Log into the web browser admin
[*]Go to Settings, then click on Click to edit settings
[*]Change Connect Type to WinINetProxy
[*]In the address and port fields, put the other queue you want to go through
[*]Click Submit

How do I get through my proxy server?
This is the same method as connecting through another SetiQueue, but in the address and port fields, put the address of your Proxy server instead. If it uses authentication (ie you need a password to get out), enter this too

If you have any tips you want added to this list, please PM me, and I shall add them. If you are setting up a public Queue, thanks, and please PM Poof with the details in the above list (IP/DNS name, port, upload/download speeds, and location), as well as sending a PM to Soni, and it will be added to the list above, and also to Soni's hourly SetiQueue Status Updates

Hey Garry - long time no see me. LOL That's what happens when one gets sent to training. One must then actually use the training, with little time for doing anything else. :Q :p

Great instructions! :D

We seem to be out of balance. :Q

I (my Queue) have too many clients and many TeAm Queues have too little.

Do you think I'd hurt anyone's feelings if I asked them, ever so nicely, to consider moving to one of the other TeAm Queues?

I would be happy to have some more people using my queue, i've got hardly anyone using it :)

Hrmm...ok, I must be missing something. If someone can PM me or give me a messenger we can chat on, I'd really appreciate it. Trying to set up Seti Queue on my server box, and it's not going very well. This just isn't my day, it seems :(

Just returned home about 30 minutes ago and found that today around 2:30 PM CDT a storm hit the area and power was down for a good while. Discovered a flaw in my emergency preparedness. :Q

It appears my 30 KW generator kicked in like it was supposed to and the power to the The TeAm's SetiQueue never stopped but ....
the emergency generator does not power the A/C unit on that end of the house. Thus it appears the workshop became quickly overheated and all of the computers (13 in all) shut down including the SetiQueue machine, Smoke #8. :(

I have gotten the SetiQueue back up and operating. I'll get to the other 12 computers later. Just drove in from Amarillo, TX (14+ hours) and I'm a little exhausted. ;)

Just so you know, my queue hasn't been up since about May, although I can put it back up in about 2 weeks ;) (going back to school)

Hey all! Long time no post in DC!

Just want to let you all know that my queue has been running quite well for the last
6 months and not one person has ever PM'ed me about any issues. Seems like the
JSetiDoor program seems to be doing the job quite well. Right now I would estimiate
that my queue is doing about 8GB month +/- 1GB.

Poof, you can update the info for my queue. Instead of giving the IP, can you use
setiq.muc-central.com? Hard coding the IP could possibly result in similar issues
experienced with people using OK's queue.

Hope you are all doing swell! :D

Please forgive the n00b, but how do I configure my Seti@Home client to look for WU's on a server other than the official one? Right now I'm running the CLI client with SetiSpy; do I need to get another program that will manage the downloading and uploading of WU's to Seti Queue servers?

Thanks guys,
-Grant :)

Grant,

You will want to configure it to use a Proxy server, with one of the above addresses. If there is no special "Proxy" option in SetiSpy (been so long since I looked at it!) then if i remember correctly, there is an option to specify the executable that it uses. If you can do this, then you can add the following to the end of the file path: -proxy address:port with the information from above :)

Hope that helps!

Ok, thanks Garry. I found a part of SetiSpy that allows you to pass parameters to the executable as it starts. I thought that the -proxy parameter was just used if you were behind a firewall, but it makes sense that it can also be used to access a port of a Seti Queue server on another machine.

Thanks!
-Grant :D

Actually, a little more than three days.

The TeAm Qs turn in an average of 3,083.25 WUs @ day.

Currently there are 26,454 WUs Queued which computes to a little over 8.5 days. :p :D

Anyway, it appears there are only three Qs currently holding results ... mainly mine. I was going to do a shut-down and restart (the first in 42 days) but I see that the Queued Results are starting to be turned in. So I think I'll watch it a while before deciding to reboot or not. ;)

[Edit] Rebooting did not fix it. I've disabled all DOWNLOADs and PASS-THROUGHs and have gotten all of the Queued Results sent in. There seems to be a problem that is being initiated by the PASS-THROUGH REQUESTS.

Woops! I should check this thread more often... anyone recall how my server handled the seti server downtime?
I hope everyone had enough workunits to crunch while this was going on. My server is running like a top, so
I don't pay as much attention to it as I have before :)

What day did they come back online? It will be interesting to see my data transfer report for that day :D

I know it's kinda late in the game, or maybe not :p, but do any Q operators open them up to non TeAm members?
There's always people on the S@H msg boards saying they're having trouble connecting to Berkeley & sometimes they get directed to a public Q to see if that fixes the problem.
Could be a way of helping people out & maybe get a few new members in the process.

Whadaya think?

Mucman,
If i direct someone to your Q do you want them to email you first or just go ahead & connect?
Oops, i see in the "see notes below" that you do need a email first. Do you want me to post your email addy in my replies or i could just send them to this forum & they can get it from your profile?
