A Connellsville High School math teacher and coach is accused of "sexting" a female student at the high school.
Kevin Lee Bell, 26, of 176 Gimlet Hill Road, Mt. Pleasant, was charged Tuesday by state police with single counts of obscene and other sexual materials and performance and corruption of a minor.
Police said the 17-year-old senior told her mother that Bell had texted pictures of his genitals and a video of himself performing a sex act.
On March 26, the student told troopers at the Uniontown barracks that Bell was her math teacher last year.
Around March 9, Bell messaged the student on Facebook. She tried to add him to her account, but Bell told her she couldn't until she was 18 and had graduated from high school, according to police.
The two continued to message each other on Facebook and exchanged cell phone numbers, police said.
Bell later sent her the photos and video, she told police. A few days after that, Bell texted her to ask her to delete everything and not to text him in school or speak to him, police said.
When Trooper James Pierce interviewed Bell at his residence Tuesday, the teacher said he was drinking when he sent the pictures to the student. He said he may have texted the video but doesn't remember.
Bell, a 2008 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, was hired as a math teacher at the high school in 2009. He coached the varsity basketball team for the past two seasons.
"The health and safety of all of our students are paramount in any situation," Dr. Tammy Stern, the school district's interim superintendent, said in a written statement. "Appropriate steps are taken to protect the students."
