Here is the situation. I went to take a test in one of my engineering classes today. I have copies of previous exams from the same professor. When the teacher gave us the test, we all were shocked to see that it was the EXACT same test from 4 semesters ago. I worked the problems so many times that I knew the answers by heart. I had to have made a 100%.

My question is this....is there anything wrong with knowing the answers to the test? I did study hard for the test but I feel a little guilty.

If the teacher lets the students keep the tests after they have been graded then it is fair game. They know they are out there and the teacher is just lazy. Hell our school library keeps old tests on file that anyone can go look at.

That's the teachers problem, not yours.

It would be different if the test that you studied with was stolen out of the teachers office, but if the "study sheet" that you were using was a legitimate copy, then I really see no problem.

You had no way of knowing that the teacher was going to use the same test again ... you are off the hook ... just think of it as someone up above was looking out for you .. not to mention you did study and would have been prepared had it been a totally different test ... dont worry about it ... this is the teacher's screw up not yours ....

No problem.
They all know it exists and if the teacher is lazy enough not to care so be it.
When I was in school we'd lie cheat and steal for any edge to help balance the load, we called it time management. For a person with problems with it, they had a harder time justifying it but everyone that had the opportunity did.

You did nothing wrong since you had no intention of cheating. You studied hard and probably would have gottona good grade anyway.

I never had the exact same test but some recycled problems a few times. It is fair game if they are from a few years ago for instance from an older sibling.

You're in the clear, it was the teacher's laziness.

Plus, how would you know that the test would be the same as a previous test? :)

If the instructor returns the tests to the students, then he knows they're out there and being used as study guides. Sounds like just basic laziness or apathy on his part and you haven't done anything wrong at all.

I give the exams back to my students and then make up new ones every semester. It's a little work, but that's what I get paid for.
