the new TEAC on sale this week at Compusa has burnproof and 4 MB buffer, while almost all other burnproof drives have only 2MB buffer. I am wondering whats the advantage of this. the price is mere $99 after MIR. is it better than the plextor with 2MB buffer and burnproof? thanks.

I've never seen that TEAC, but my Plextor 12/10/32S scsi drive also has a 4mb buffer and burnproof. I've never had a coaster using it, but it might also be that it's a scsi drive.:)

there's no advantage to a larger buffer with burn proof. 2MB or 4MB it doesn't make a difference.

well, technically, 4 is better so it has more room before burnproof initiates. although in real life, it might as well have 500kb.

buckeye,
Check out the Teac CDRW review at www.storagereview.com
If memory serves me well the 4MB Spec is reduced as the unit uses part of this memory to operate it's own bios .......... or whatever, anyway the buffer is large enough to function properly and the newer EB model has "Burn-Proof" anyway .........

I ordered this model w/EB several months ago and no problems so far .........
I wouldn't go so far as to say this unit is better than a Plextor ...... but it is a great drive for the money, I may get another one to use as a gift at this price.......!

clumsum, I donno what benchmark is to be used to compare this TEAC and a plextor, but I am interested in knowing where it performs poorer when compared to a plextor.

asubit, with higher buffer, the chances of burn-proof kicking in will be less, so you burn faster, with extra-minimal gaps. do multitasking with a 2MB buffer BP drive and a 4MB buffer BP drive, and I think there is gonna be a huge difference in burn time, and cd quality.

buckeye, you may think there is a huge difference in speed but in reality there is not.

my ricoh has justlink and a 4mb buffer...the buffers are virtually useless since they can clear in a mere couple few seconds...the buffer that nero creates is more useful, as its' larger (whatever size u want to set it to)...

anyway, it's a good drive - the plextor is good too, though i don't consider them as awesome as some would like us to believe...
