Situation- Subject CD ROM will accept a CD but not play. System indicated problems with seeing the TEAC. Driver is OK. Running Windows XP SP2 with recent security update. Do I ha ve a registry problem? It's in a Toshiba Satelliete 2455-S3001 if that helps.

Any ideas.

Thanks,

Ed

Do you see the CD info in My Computer or does the drive just display CD drive? If it just displays' CD drive then it's not recognizing the CD. Have you tried using other CD's to see if you get the same thing?

No CD drive shows up in My Computer.

When I go to Control Panel, Sytems, Hardware, the CD-ROM model shows up but with a warning sign indicating that the driver is there but the PC does not see the CD hardware.

Have heard that buying an external CD-ROm may overcoem this problem.

Sure, but that doesn't fix your problem. It should work.

Has it ever worked? Is this a new laptop? Warranty?

Actually you got that kinda backwards. If it shows up in the Device Manager and even shows the drives name and model number, it DOES see the drive but the yellow exclamation means there is no driver or the current driver is not working. Try updating the driver.
