TDK running slow

My TDK burner is running really slow. It's 24x10x40. Before it would take me about 5 minutes to copy a CD. Now it's taking me 45 minutes to copy the SAME CD. Before I was running 98SE now i'm running W2K Pro. I did a Clean install for windows 2k. When I was running 98SE it would burn the cd's in 5 minutes. When I went to windows 2k it's now taking 45 minutes. Is something wrong with my burner? The other night I burned a cd and it took 3 minutes but the rest of the CD's take 30-45 minutes. What can I do to fix this problem?

a) Double check your burn speed settings. It probably got bumped to a low speed.

b) Delete any accumulated temp files and run defrag. After banging away on the newsgroups I tend to flood my drive plus fragment the hell out of it. So much that it will interfere with attempting to burn as it can't find a big enough free work space on the drive. After defragging it works fine again. Something to consider.

c) If all else fails then try reinstall the ASPI layer and your burning proggy.

Do you have the latest drivers installed for your board?

Win2k will let give you the option, it is located under ?Device Manager?. If ?DMA if available? is not selected, you may want to do so. If you get problems, you may want to revert back to what it was (PIO mode 🙁 ) I have the same burner, and it takes me about 4mins to burn anything at 16x, and 3mins to burn anything at 24x.

<< How come windows 2k doesn't give you the option to enable DMA? does it do it automaticaly? >>

no!
unlike win98, you need to check under ide controllers in device manager to see if it's using pio or dma mode.

I was using PIO. I switched it to DMA but it still takes about 10 minutes. Is there anything else I can do to make it perform any better?
