<< If Fry's is selling it for $109 then why not pricematch that price over at Circuit City? Then it would be $39, right? $129 - $20 (pricematch) - $50 (rebate #1) - $20 (rebate #2) = $39 + tax >>

i was gonna say the same thing.

The 24x TDK drive I just picked up has Smart Burn

The manufacturing date on the drive is 12-24-01. Therefore, I think this may be a
Lite-On :Q

Yes it's at the B&M and in the flyer.

I found this at the TDK site....

"bp15_v36.bin"
*Newest Firmware upgrade for the veloCD 24/10/40X model ONLY.
Not to be used with veloCD 24/10/40B or 24/10/40XA model (refer to print on face plate of drive for exact model of your drive)

What model is that "Liteon" one you got there BDP?

Here's the driver page at TDK BTW - TDK-support-24x

<< For the same price you can buy Pacific Digital (rebaged LITE-ON) from Staples.
LITE-ON 24X is the only one on the market which can break SD2 enconding without CloneCD
>>

The Staples ad lists the Pacific Digital at $119.99 - $10 instant - $20 MIR = $89.94. Is there a better deal at some Staples? Also, I don't know what SD2 encoding means. Is that some new copy protection scheme?

So what is the ultimate verdict on this??

Good? bad? I don't want to order and have it be some crap thing. However anything is an improvement over what I currently have.

It's hot. IF you need a drive now. I paid $70 after rebates dor a TDK 16x a couple of months ago and thought I got a great deal.

That figures.
Maybe I'll check my CC B&M later today.

Oh well, it seems all burners end up between $50 and $70 whien the next generation comes out.

Mac

The TDK is a deal... go get one if you can afford.

Hey! I just heard that E-MACHINES are rebadged DELL'S! Honestly! I checked the numbers and everything! 🙂

Sanyo makes good drives. I'm using a 16x SCSI Sanyo. If you search Anandtech, you'll find that some people are having problems with Lite-On drives. Seems to be hit or miss with the Lite-On.

I'd personally look for one that's marked "Burn-Proof" to get the sanyo.

The TDK I just picked up with the manufacturing date of 12-24-01 is model 24/10/40B

What model did others get from Circuit City??

OK, so I order the Pacific Digital drive from the Staples website. I'm reading the Sunday paper and looking through the Staples circular and see that a 10 pack of IBM 16x cdr's is supposed to come with this also. I call staples.com to get them to add the cdr's. The staples rep (very polite) puts me on hold for a minute, comes back and says no problem. Adds the cdr's to the order and then tells me that the Pacific Digital drive is currently out of stock. I'm like "cr@p". I ask him to check the B&M store that is local to me. He does and says that they have one. He calls the store, speaks to the manager and has her hold it for me. I go down to the store, pick up the drive and take a copy of my email confirmation from staples.com. The manager gives me the drive for the after rebate price of 89.94 and then applies the $20 coupon from the staples.com order. I get the free cdr's and am out the door with the drive and cdr's for a grand total of $73.09. It gets better, this price is before the $30 rebate I will end up only paying $43.09 for this drive. The best part is that I take the drive out of the box...guess what...LiteOn Model # LTR24102B. There is a label on the drive that has this info...this is the best deal I have gotten in a while...

So smart-burn are crappy ones??
I ordered one for pick-up online.. How do I know which is which??
Also, if I dont go pick-up my order, does it get cancelled automatically?

TDK uses several drive manufacturers and rebadges them for their VeloCD brand name. The original TDK 24X CD-RWs were indeed Sanyos with Burn-Proof, but the newest ones are Lite-On with Smart-Burn. My CC had several versions of this TDK drive on the shelf. One had Burn Proof, two had Just-Link, and the rest (about 10) had Smart-Burn. Unless you know which drive manufacturers use wHich buffer underrun technology, then you are SOL

So, I just picked up the last two from the nearest CC.

I called just after they opened and had them hold 2 of them for me...they had 9 left.
By the time I got there, 15 minutes later, I walked over to the counter, talked to the salesman (who's name I had just gotten over the phone) and at the same time, another guy showed up to get two.
Only, he hadn't called and reserved his and they were out. They did a special order for him, however, at the price as listed in the ad and printed him the rebate(s).

The moral to the story is... even though the web site says "out" and the store is "out", you can still get 'em.

my local cc allowed me to pm to the fry's instore price of 109...with tax and after MIR, total should come out to a shade under 50.

btw my drive was manufactured 12/21/01 and it is a smartburn.

how does this drive compare to the sony 24x10x40x that i just picked up from Staples? should i take the sony back for the tdk?

Ok, I just ordered it for pickup at my local store (you can do it from their website). But I have had problems with LiteOn CD-ROM drives.

Should I get the Sanyo rather than the LiteOn?
