This is a great drive, I'm very happy with mine. It performs well, is fast (as far as consumer desktop drives anyway) and is barely audible. However it does seem to run a little hot as it runs at 37C and a 7200.7 60GB above it runs at 33C. My ambient case temp is around the lower 30s.

I was considering picking this up for RAID but my computer budget is exhausted. :(

And a 5 year warranty to boot!

If I didn't just pick up a 250 from some other hot deal I'd be all over this, I'm dying to get some sata drives, I'm all out of ide ports.

so is Tiger Direct any better now? They seem to have a decent 6 month resellerrating and any negative comments, a TD rep has answered the concern?

I thought the new drives were eighth generation...7200.8?

correct, this is the older generation (7200.8 is the latest).

Is command queueing the only significant difference between .7 and .8?

I assume to make use of command queueing the OS drivers have to be able to support it. I wonder how common is the support for it in windows and linux.

You are incorrect. The warranty on this drive is only 60 days. Please be aware of this before you buy. Click on the warrantly link on the page.

check again. warranty is for 60 months not 60 days. (60 months = 5 years)

For me there is tax and shipping on this. Still a decent price on a good drive but I would only be saving $10 at most. For me it breaks down like this..

$99.99
$9.92 SH
$7.69 tax
------------
$117.58

$9.92 for shipping??? I find that a bit expensive. Especially since if I'm being charged tax that means they do business here in FL. Which in turn means the drive probably isnt coming that far. I hate when people over charge for shipping. Toss in the fact that TDs reputation blows and thats enough to get me to pass. Sucks....I've been looking for a decent deal on a nice SATA drive. I think I'll wait a bit longer though.

EDIT:
Actually I was wrong. I would be saving about a buck and thats it...

For those that can get it without tax its ok. For me its not hot.

Got 2 of these drives in the Dell deal ($109 per drive) about 6 months ago and couldn't be happier. Im thinking of picking up 2 more at this price. I hate rebates on harddrives.

I just placed an order now ... hopefully it'll be fine. I realised later that the drive is OEM - speaks volumes about how impusive a buyer I am :)
But my DFI mobo came with SATA cables ... so no sweat there. I can d/l the software from seagate website directly. So things are cool there too.
Just hope that the drive will arrive in tiptop condition.

Thanks to the poster for the deal!

Moron.

Who the hell would trust a drive that only offers a 2 month warranty? You gotta be pretty dumb to think that.

I've always been hesitant to try tiger direct after all the horrible things I've heard, but I really haven't heard anything bad about them lately. I'm in for one.... with 5 year warranty I guess I can't go wrong.
