problem: cannot access internet or other computers via TCP/IP
background....
network below was completely functional (file & printer
sharing worked; all PCs could access internet)
normal setup is all file & printer sharing over IPX;
internet only through TCP
did clean reinstall of Win me on PC4 and could no longer
access internet on that PC
PC4....
clean re-install of win me (3x now, including a reformat)
added IPX protocol
enabled file & printer sharing
bound file & printer sharing to IPX
unbound file & printer sharing from TCP
ran win XP network wizard from floppy on PC4 (also tried with
win me network wizard)
network setup...
3com cable modem (using ethernet)
linksys 4 port/wireless router
linksys 5 port hub (uplinked to router)
PC1-win XP home, linksys nic to router
PC2-win me, linksys nic to switch
PC3-win me, linksys nic to hub
PC4-win me, linksys nic* to hub (also tried a working DLink NIC;
also tried a direct connection to router)
PC5-win XP home, internal nic to router/linksys wireless nic
observations:
PC4 can file & print share over IPX
PC4 cannot access internet over TCP
PC4 cannot access file & print share over TCP (reset PC1 & PC2 to file
& print share over TCP...could see each other but not PC4 nor
could PC4 see them)
all other PCs can file & print share, all can access internet
also tried powering down all PCs, cable modem, router, hub
also tried reset on router
winipcfg...
run on PC4 and the TCP IP address is not my router IP address
tried release all and renew all....no change
one other odd observation...it appears that binding file & printer sharing
to a different protocol (IPX) than internet access does not prevent a PC from
accessing files on another PC (when I rebound file share on PC1 to TCP I COULD
STILL ACCESS files on other PCs that were file bound to IPX only not TCP)!!
