no new apps, just some updates.

have AVG on it and it claims the phone is fine. but its not

it cant keep up with my typing AT ALL. which is horrid

teh battery usage shows me nothing usefull. the game I was playing last night has the most 'refraction' then the display.

nothing else of use, dialer had like 12%, then system idle, and the weather app in single digits

have AVG on it

This might be your problem.

If a factory default is an option, that would probably speed things up for you.

Facebook just updated... maybe that's causing it? I know there's always been problems with the sync.

I didnt install the facebook update till last night

I cant factory default it. getting the work email setup through touchdown(groupwise) is a royal PITA and generally takes a good hour and half.

I am migrating to google cloud in like a week as part of a 'beta' so I can do it after that if its still slow.

you think AVG is killing it eh?

what AV/malware protection should I use?

Depends on if you really think you need it. I don't use any. Unless you're constantly downloading fishy-looking apps or opening attachments from random spam email on your phone, there really isn't much of a need for antivirus on your phone.

I can't speak to AVG's ability or performance, but I know that it is mediocre at best on the PC.

Do they specify which security apps you're allowed to use? I've had decent luck with LookOut, but I've never ran it for any length of time. Common sense has worked well, never had any issues with malware.

Why don't you backup the apps and factory reset? See if that fixes the problem. There is 0 reason you would need to set touchdown up again.

Or if you only were worried about setting touchdown up....I would even bet touchdown has a export/import settings option to export the settings to a SD card... I know many email apps do.

You can even backup all your SMS etc with something like SMS Backup+ which will back up SMS to gmail. I personally use this one as it is a set it and forget it type app. I restore the program every time I decide to change ROMs and press the restore button and thats it.

no just that I am required to have an antivirus software package

I do use smsbackup+, it ROCKS

touchdown with groupwise is a PITA and it won't just pick up with a reset and restore as I have been down this route. its likely more due to the POS hosted solution they selected as the email system here is a nightmare

Try LookOut. I run it for the recovery options (if you lose the phone), but I leave the viral-scanning on anyway. I have no idea how effective it is (or how any of them are, for that matter), but it is there...

Root it, backup everything using Titanium Backup, factory default, then restore the settings for ONLY the apps you need. Let the market download the rest. This will work fine with your email/groupwise settings, I do it all the time with Exchange.

It sounds like something isn't quite right with your phone, but a factory default is what your provider will make you try first.

rooting it is not an option or it would already be done

its working 'OK' now after fighting to get go sms off and back on a few times.

but I am thinking tomorrow it may be reset back to defaults.

one thing I miss about my blackberry, plug it in, back it up, blow it away, restore it. took like 20 minutes

Yeah but what else did the BB do besides email? Nothing. :)
