Taxes and Marriage

Just wondering, because this topic came up over dinner, can you still be claimed as a dependent by your parents if you got married? Also, would your marriage status have to be reported to IRS in subsequent tax forms afterward, or in any other form? And please, this is all hypothetical

Uhhh, i guess so - If they are paying for more than 50% of your needs. I could be wrong.
Why would you do that? If you are married, and don't make squat (maybe both students?) - Claim things like the earned income credit, school credits, etc. You'd come out ahead for sure.

Hmmm... but is there a way to get married but not for your parents to find out? Or will they find out eventually because they have to claim it on their IRS reports and stuff?

yes. even your spouse can be claimed by your parents if he/she lives with them for at least 6 mos. the catch is, when its your turn to file income tax in the same year, you 2 cannot claim yourselves as an exemption.

maybe, just maybe they'll find out when your name & SSN appears on your IT and theirs.

OK, more specific scenario.

Let's say that the two want to be married without the parents on both sides knowing about it. Currently they are both being claimed as dependents and are tax exemptions for both parents. Can all these factors remain the same if the two get married without the parents finding out?

Sure. Maybe if the wife didn't change her last name. This sounds a little shady..kinda fits with your username?

If I got a quarter for everytime someone made that comment on this forum to me... 😉

I tried looking this up myself to see if it was possible after dinner because it sounds interesting, the IRS website just confused me so I thought my fellow ATOTers could help me figure this one out 🙂

man, the idea of getting married is.......to BE TOGETHER, to LIVE TOGETHER. don't you think its kinda awkward after getting married, you 2 will go back to normal like nothing happened. get married. live w/ your parents or live w/ your in-laws, then let them claim you 2. that way you'll be doing them a favor (i guess) if you 2 will let them claim you 2 exemptions.

I think you should talk to an accountant or a tax lawyer or something.... I think factors like how long you were married, how much you made, who's filing, etc... all fall into play... one thing for sure.. if you are a dependent of somebody, you cannot file for yourself... you definetly have to ask somebody qualified... I could be totally wrong...
