Tax system definitely needs reformed.

Maybe that W2 is real, maybe is wasn't

The shops prepared more than 105,000 returns last year. All of them are partly owned by Farrukh Sohail of Atlanta, who was accused in court papers of creating a ''business environment'' where ''fraudulent tax return preparation is encouraged and flourishes.''

He is partner or owner of more than 125 stores that engaged in this fraudulent return scheme. If the average person on the street cannot do their own taxes, even with 1040EZ, either something is seriously wrong with our tax system or our education system.

I think both, but first the tax system has to be reformed. I use a program to help me figure out my taxes and I don't have anything really complex. Other than selling my house, my investments, and such, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Yet I need this software because finding the forms I HAVE to fill out is half the battle. Even then some are so asinine that without a program to offer suggestions I would not be sure whats going where.

Flat tax or Fair tax, anything is better than this travesty we have now.

I saw this yesterday; made me laugh because I was wondering how they were sponsoring that Nascar this year 😉.

Turbo Tax or Tax act will make taxes a breeze. Anybody can do their own taxes, people are just too stupid

People Primarily B!tch about taxes because they dont keep all the paperwork they need and they want to cheat the system as much as they can.

The Tax code Is complicated because people in this country are getting Dumber that Sh!t everyday. Dont Blame the "Tax" Code, blame our education System.

Math is scary.

A company, apparently commits fraud and Shivetya, the apologist for corporations, blames the government?

isn't the tax code something like 60,000 pages long... I'll blame that.

 the average joe sixpack has a w-2, some interest, some dividends, maybe some stock sales, mortgage interest, property taxes, and some charitible contributions. that probably takes up 20 pages of tax law. the rest is corporate tax law or speciality personal tax law such as expatriate taxation, foreign national taxation, or military taxation.

also, the monkeys that they have at jackson hewitt preparing tax returns are not accountants. they take a class given by jackson hewitt to prepare returns. most have not gone to college and graduated with an accounting degree. no offense to any jackson hewitt employees here.

The complexity of the tax code encourages people and tax service industries to come up with creative ways to lower peoples tax liability.

It doesnt. I'm just pointing out that it's a natural consequence of the complexity of the tax code. The tax code needs to be stripped down to something that is simple, like a flax tax or a VAT. It would also send a good number of the lobbyists in Washington packing.

While Shivetya (per norm) goes overboard . . . s/he has got a point.

The US tax code sux and it sux b/c our government sux . . . at least the ones responsible for the ridiculous detritus of laws that apply to the tax code, thereby requiring thousands of pages of regulations/rules.

National sales tax that would eventually replace all income taxes (regardless of source) would be nice. If they don't fix the income tax structure first, then a national tax system should coincide with a progressive plan for which income taxes go first:

1) SS/Medicare: Everybody pays so everybody gets a tax cut. Just start exempting income from the bottom and eventually everyone is covered.

2) Regular Income tax: Exempting from the bottom means everyone gets a tax cut. My guess is that at some level (say 150k+), a headwind will develop as the general public refuses to pay higher sales tax (VAT or whatever) just so higher income families can afford to keep the pool heated. Will probably lead to flat tax of income above the exemption. At least it will be simple.

3) Capital gains/dividends: Again exempt from the bottom. Will likely reach an equilibrium comparable to earned income. Hopefully, sound minds will prevail and it will be at the same rate as earned income. Alternatively, the don't tax production crowd may win out. All taxes on unearned😉 income will end and the burden will shift to either higher earned income families or entirely to the national sales tax.

Obviously, the national sales tax will have to exempt food. But it's only a matter of time before the food police insist that processed food does not get an exemption. Sorry Lil' Debbie.

That's why we need a national sales tax system and be done with it.

And an Amen to you, as well.

And then such a sales tax will have to be tweaked so the "lower levels" do not become unduly burdened as a percentage of income.

Lobby groups will spring up to protect those "deserving" people.

And then there will be tax breaks created to support national policy issues.

the system may become simpiler, however, the abuse by certain groups and the need to support those groups will still exist.

And some will want the tax to be graduated to punish those that have more income.

ie. Tax on a Chevy 10% Tax on a Caddy 15%

How about abolishing income tax, and just having a sales tax and tolls.

How about abolishing all sales taxes, property taxes, excise taxes, etc. and only tax income over $100,000.

I'm quite surprised you would support this CPA. Arent you an accountant? It seems a simplified tax code would be pretty bad for your bottom line.

I'm a fan of a progressive tax code. But your proposal essentially places the entire burden of funding government (local, state, federal) on probably 1/4 of the population. That doesn't seem fair considering it would have to be a pretty hefty tax rate.

And if Every joe Schmoe needed to hire a 4-8 year educated tax accountant, That would scare me.

You do realize those people get educated to manage Tax liability for public intitutions and corporations dont you?

I would say their Finacials are a little more complicated than the average individual american.

And Guess What, People Also go to school for Corporate Law and For Business

Maybe, maybe not. If they made the tax a straight flat tax so the coporations and billionares would have no loopholes, it might not have to be as high as a percentage as one thinks.

Of course I haven't done a study and have nothing to back this up, just opinion.

Sounds like a goal of Democrats, but I doubt sales taxes would be abolished, they would probably get set only for "luxury items" so as to soak the rich even more.

Property Taxes, again because only the rich cannot afford homes according to most.

Income tax for those over 100k, yeah, there ain't enough of them to swing an election - basically a politician dream system.

I say tax the sale of all items, including food and rebate an amount of the tax for the amount of food needed to sustain the legal family of the tax payer.
