I just bought a house last year (2004). Now that's it time for taxes, and i'm too cheap to go to H&R block, what tax software would you use to do it? I've always been using TaxCut Deluxe but don't think it's good enough if i want to deduct the closing cost and all.

Anyway in my shoes or have been in my shoes previously?

My mom tried both taxcut and turbotax in 2002 and liked turbotax better. Things may have changed, though.

do you need to different tax software for both state and federal taxes?
I want to do my taxes myself this year but was wondering what software to use, nothing complicated like the OT with a house.

if u make under 30K a year make sure u check out turbotax/others websites to see if u qualify for their free web versions....i used thsoe tha past 2 years and its always worked out great as an efile sorta thing.

i prefer turbotax overall though..very intuative and user friendly

yes....theres diff forms and rules so have to get your federal and state seperately (unless they are packaged together)

TurboTax

From previous discusions though, it's pretty much been concluded that both products are so similar that it really doesn't matter which you pick anymore. They both are mature now and therefore easy to use with similar features and abilities.

Edit: i miss my tax accountant, he moved to florida, charged me 40 bucks for both state and federal.

It is around $30 to complete and e-file both your state and federal returns. I have used turbo tax online for the last couple years, it's a snap.

I was a regular TurboTax user until Intuit cooked up that ridiculous copy protection scheme a while back. I switched to TaxCut and really didn't notice any great difference. Stayed with TaxCut.

They cost the same around here.

taxact requires you to pay if you want to e-file. If you guys check out www.irs.gov they list some sites where completing and filing your taxes is completely free.

5 bucks or so to efile... I don't remember the amount, but it wasn't much.
Was worth it to have my $$ back in 2 weeks.
