Tax Cuts explained

Got this on another web site:

This is how the cookie crumbles. Please read it carefully. Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

* The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
* The fifth would pay $1.
* The sixth would pay $3.
* The seventh $7.
* The eighth $12.
* The ninth $18.
* The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.

"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20."

So, now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.

So, the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six, the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share'?

The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being 'PAID' to eat their meal.

So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

* The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100%savings).
* The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
* The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
* The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
* The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
* The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man "but he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than me!"

"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore. There are lots of good restaurants in Europe and the Caribbean.

But since the restaurant wanted to price things cheaper, they fired guys 1-7 and since guy 10 owns all the restaurants and so he gets more money in his pocket from the labor savings. :p

Don't take my post too seriously. Just wanted to point out how a little story telling can give out any message you want.

I've heard that story before, and it makes the point I was talking about in some recent "tax the rich" topic. The fact is, we have the rich to thank for social security, the military, and most all the goodies and benefits we get from the government. Most all the technologies, medicines, and jobs.... our very standard of living is the result of those evil rich people. Our whole society rides on the back of those that pay 80%+ of the taxes.

Instead of playing the class envy/warfare game and trying to soak the rich, we should be promoting those things that will pull MORE people into the rich category and allow them to make even more money.

Except tax breaks dont' work that way. They are directed towards a minority group of people and don't apply to everyone.

Wrong about Social Security. Everybody pays the same % from dollar one but only earnings up to $87,500 are taxed. Everything above that is SS tax free. This means somebody earning $87,500 pays about $10,900 in SS tax (well 1/2 is payed by the employer). A person earning $5,000,000 pays the same $10,900. Thus the rich are not "supporting" SS in the way you suggest.

They applied to everyone. If you paid taxes, you got a tax cut.

And every person who pays taxes now has an additional $14,000 deficit added to their future taxes.

That amount goes up $18.00 per day.

wirelessenabled, besides the amount payed by the employer, thank the rich for creating the jobs that allowed that person to pay their SS tax. And without the rich, our society would be so poor that SS would pay out about $5

.... now say "thank you"

Engineer, that's great... take the financial situation today and extrapolate that into the future, never mind the billion and one things that can affect and change the economy and tax revenue that will occur.

We've run a deficit in all but 3 years since 1969. It's not just the future, it's the past.

Everybody wants the service minus the pork........and everybody (including me) wants to keep their money. It's only a matter of time.......one or the other is going to explode.

A huge portion of the budget is just interest on the debt... money wasted. Something's gotta happen. (Maybe nice countries will forgive some of our debt someday?) :) :)

Last I heard was about $450,000,000,000 per year. About $4,500 per taxpayer (actually paying taxes) per year.

I doubt that our debt will be forgiven.

The number looks quite large when expanded, doesn't it. ;)

(P.S. I would much prefer government cutbacks in spending vs tax increases...but I feel that neither side actually in Washington feels the same)

It is like $300B of a 2.2trillion budget. I would not call it huge, but too much yes.

What's the national debt these days.. I figure maybe around $4,528,719,000,000 ?

I propose a non-military spending freeze of 4 years. There's gotta be sacrifice.

Total: 7,400,000,000,000. Debt ceiling has been achieved.

Now watch that debt "ceiling" crumble about as fast as it was put up. :)
