Nice post! I was able to snag one of the last ones in the Baltimore area -- $49 and change out the door 😀

Is nothing but a gimmick. It prints hard to see graphics on the bottom of the disc where it is hard to find any place to print anyway.
If that is the reason for buying this burner you are wasting money. Other than that I like the burner, it is unique and rather fast and reliable.

Of course everyone shares your opinion. I think it's pretty sweet.

I have gotten a number of deals here from others, and I am glad that I can finally help someone else out.

OK, I have this drive, I have no problem with burning but I have to say that I do not see any advantage over Liteon. Except for DiscT@2 which is as far as I am concerned a completely useless gimmick. The reason why they are geting out of the market is simply because they cannot compete. The same fate will struck Plextor. It is not that Liteon is cheaper and worse. It is cheaper and equally good if not better.

In the same way that Mercedes could not compete with Yugo, if that's all the market was willing to pay for a car, certainly. But true quality does cost more money. Yamaha's were never cheap, but they were good. Plextor was willing to give up quality, and make their drives in China to compete, and even went as far as using belt-driven tray mechanisms. Ugh.

Lite-On is cheap, and as far as the money that they will cost you, they are the "best of cheap" (Light-years better than Acer/BenQ and TopG), but they are certainly not "the best".

My Sony/Lite-On can't even read audio subcode index marks correctly, something that some of the online reviews also mentioned was a problem with the newer, faster, Lite-On drives. Never had a problem with my Yamaha, in fact it even reads and writes CD+G format effortlessly, which is something that not every drive of that era could do.

(Nevermind the issue with the 24X IDE Lite-Ons, that had a non-working SPDIF digital-out connector on the back that wasn't actually wired in right, and connecting it would cause the drive to stop functioning entirely.)

It's predecessor, Yamaha CRW3200E could not burn CDRWs for me. It could only burn CDRs.

Although UNCHECKING DMA in Device Manager > CD Burner options solves this CDRW burning problem, it slows down the computer during the burning process to a crawl. It only affects CDRW discs of all types, not CDRs.

It also couldn't read some discs. I RMA'd it and it came back reading discs it couldn't previously but the CDRW burning problem remains.

That's very odd, that it would affect CD-RW and not CDRs. Sounds more like a software issue. Do you have a Via chipset, by any chance? Or install the Intel Application Accelerator drivers? Both can cause issues with CD-burning software, especially packet-writing, which normally is used for CD-RWs, and not CDRs. I'm wondering if you had some packet-writing software installed as well?

Is this the drive in question? If so, the deal doesn't look at hot. I'm going to try to pick one up after work.

Looks like the same drive except The OD one's have a white faceplate. I believe that the model number is CRW-F1BEN

i was waiting for it to get a little cheaper (feeling like a scooby doo villain 😛 ) but does it come with all that software? with serials? tia!

Just verified with my local store (Alexandria, VA) they're selling it for $47.04. They're holding one for me until I get there. I didn't ask how many they had in stock, but it's worth a call: (703) 660-8671

Just picked up the drive. They had 2 more in stock. The shelf price said $99, but it rings up as $47.04. Great price on a well made drive!

No luck in Brevard County/FL - store in Melbourne wanted me to buy the $150 one on-line... Merrit Island said they had them in the front of the store on clearance but were sold out.

Proof that it's the Yamaha drive: Windows (Me and XP) fresh format/install with no drivers or additional software on multiple chipsets from ALi Magic to nForce2 and this Yamaha drive only records CDRWs with DMA disabled but CDRs with or without DMA disabled.

FWIW, both XP and WinME include built-in CD-burning software that generally should be disabled before installing and trying to use other 3rd-party software. In ME it's a CD-burning plugin for the media player, and in XP it's just a built-in general CD-burning function, although it might also have that plugin for the media player. I know that there were updates to some of those components, in order to function correctly alongside Roxio's own CD-burning software. (Those built-in components in question were written by Roxio.)

It's not inconcievable that it's a firmware problem though, I suppose.

Firmware is the latest 1.0d

But you mean Win XP:
* Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
Scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM service and double click on it then (in the
middle of the window) where it says "Startup type:" SELECT: Disabled > OK
[This is the built-in CD-burning capability (written by Roxio) that once disabled, will enable Nero to start up much quicker.]

I'm not aware of having to disable anything in Win Me to avoid conflicts with Nero.

BTW the same probs apply for installs with or without ASPI drivers.

It's good that people know what stores you checked, so you saved them a trip.

I checked every store in LAX area(ZIP 91XXX), none of them has it.

I just got back from the Dayton Mall OD in Ohio.

They had 3 burners on clearance:

Yamaha 44x...................................$37
I/O Magic 40X Ext USB 2.0.............$40
Memorex 2.4x DVD+R....................$135

I picked up 1 Yamaha and 1 Memorex. All 3 burners still in stock when I left.
