TAT crashes -- which temp program do I trust?

How is it that everyone else with WinXP can run TAT without a problem, just not me? Anyways, as you can see from that screenshot, I'm getting different readings from Core Temp/Speed Fan, and from the board manufacturer's diagnosis program. Yes, I know most people trust Core Temp, but I tend to give the edge to the board manufacturer. I generally assume they understand how to measure the temperature of the chip that's strapped onto their board.

So, I trying to run TAT to get the definitive answer as far as the true temp, and you can see what happened. I swear Intel hates me...that smiley face program icon was made especially to taunt me. TAT even works on my laptop.

lol, ur not the only one with TAT issues - i gte the same error message when i try to run it.
i use coretemp and pc probe II for my temps and there is usually a big difference between the two (10c) except for now when im running orthos x2 and both are reading within 1c of each other.

PC Probe is essentially to ASUS boards what Fox One is to Foxconn boards, I take it. So you're getting discrepancies too, between your board software and Core Temp.

You may have a bad install, happened to me. I reinstalled it and have never had the problem again even under 100% load testing, which by the way produces more heat and will reveal an unstable overclock quicker than Prime95 or any of the other stress tests.

TAT and CoreTemp read the same probes. So if TAT doesn't work, just trust CoreTemp then.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, using downloads from different websites (all version 2.05). Still no go :(.

The board software is apparently not reading the same probes that Core Temp is reading. In this case, the Core Temp readings are lower than what the board manufacturer is telling me the temps are, which makes me a little reluctant to trust Core Temp.

core temp reads the temp of each cpu core, asus probe reads the temp between cores. asus probe is typically 10+ c lower than coretemp. what version are you using?

I'm not using Asus Probe. I don't even have an ASUS board. I think someone else mentioned PC Probe, and I commented that the tool that you see in my screenshot is essentially the Foxconn version of PC Probe. Sorry about the confusion :p.

Anyways, the baffling thing in this case is that Foxconn's Fox One software is reporting a higher CPU temp than the core temperature readings from Core Temp.

Is it only 2c+ higher than the hottest core? If so, that is quite normal.

After much Googling, I think I found the answer to our TAT issues. The tool apparently only supports certain Winbond motherboard sensors (I guess that's what Intel reference boards use). I have a Fintek sensor, so it can't detect the info properly. Ironically, even SpeedFan explicitly states that it supports the particular Fintek sensor I have. I have no idea how Core Temp works, because they list supported CPUs, not supported sensors.

Anyways, I have to assume that TAT was meant only to be an internal tool, and it somehow got leaked out. As far as I know, it's not available for download from Intel's own website.

So the SpeedFan reading is almost certainly correct. The Core Temp readings are identical to the SpeedFan ones. The motherboard may not be reading what I assumed it was reading...it only shows a single temp instead of two individual core readings.

FYI - Core temp doesn't take temp readings from the Windbond ( or whatever ) chip that the BIOS ( and some monitoring software ) uses for voltage and temp readings.
It takes the value from a CPU register that has a value based on the DTS ( digital thermal sensor ) built into each core, and converts it to a temperature reading..
