I've always been interested in sampling "exotic" cuisine. A couple years ago I wanted to make spaghetti with buffalo "balls" for Christmas dinner. But that idea was shot down. Anyway, in my search for frugal and healthy recipes, I somehow encountered the following:

Tasty Bug Recipes

Bug Blox
1. 2 large packages gelatin
2. 2 1/2 cups boiling water (do not add cold water)
3. Stir boiling water into gelatin. Dissolve completely.
4. Stir in dry-roasted leafhoppers.
5. Pour mixture slowly into 13 x 9 inch pan. Chill at least 3 hours.
6. BLOX will be firm after 1 hour, but may be difficult to remove from pan. Cutting blox: dip bottom pan in warm water 15 seconds to loosen gelatin. Cut shapes with cookie cutters all the way through gelatin. Lift with index finger or metal spatula. If Blox stick, dip pan again for a few seconds.

Banana Worm Bread
1. 1/2 cup shortening
2. 3/4 cup sugar
3. 2 bananas, mashed
4. 2 cups flour
5. 1 teaspoon soda
6. 1 teaspoon salt
7. 1/2 cup chopped nuts
8. 2 eggs
9. 1/4 cup dry-roasted army worms
10. Mix together all ingredients. Bake in greased loaf pan at 350 for about 1 hour.

Rootworm Beetle Dip
1. 2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
2. 1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
3. 2 tablespoons skim milk
4. 1/2 cup reduced calorie mayonnaise
5. 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
6. 1 tablespoon onion, chopped
7. 1 1/2 tsp. dill weed
8. 1 1/2 tsp. Beau Monde
9. 1 cup dry-roasted rootworm beetles
10. Blend first 3 ingredients. Add remaining ingredients and chill.

Chocolate Cricket Chip Cookies
1. 2 1/4 cup flour
2. 1 tsp. baking soda
3. 1 tsp. salt
4. 1 cup butter, softened
5. 3/4 cup sugar
6. 3/4 cup brown sugar
7. 1 tsp. vanilla
8. 2 eggs
9. 1 12-ounce chocolate chips
10. 1 cup chopped nuts
11. 1/2 cup dry-roasted crickets
12. Preheat oven to 375. In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In large bowl, combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla; beat until creamy. Beat in eggs. Gradually add flour mixture and insects, mix well. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by rounded measuring teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

I'm trying to debate whether the summary is bait, or some hidden message. Either way, I can't see myself ever using these recipies.

I've tried balut (duck egg) before. But I haven't tried any of these bug recipes. There was also a special on the Food Channel regarding exotic foods in the Philippines, and they featured a worm wood delicacy. Basically, you get live tree worms and dip them in lemon juice and eat them raw. It looked disgusting, but adventurous at the same time.
 
I ate some giant ants that were roasted and salted from Colombia. Quite tasty. Slightly smaller and less crunchy than peanuts.

Just south of Colombia they have this Peruvian delicacy. . I've been meaning to give that a try, but I haven't found any Peruvian restaurants in the area.

They also have fried testicle in Wisconsin, so I guess I'm not the only one curious about these things. I've already had shark meat and gator meat, but I'd like to give other exotic foods a try.
