taskmon.exe and mstask.exe causing shutdown problems

I'm running Win98SE. I was having some trouble with my virus program and was told the way to fix it was to use msconfig to make sure that only one copy of my virus monitor was set to startup. Ever since then when I go to shutdown the mstask.exe or taskmon.exe hang up and have an error, i.e. it comes up and asks you to close the progam and gives you the option of seeing a mem dump of the problem. I've thought about just keeping those programs from starting up using msconfig but I'm not sure if I need them for my OS to run, although I don't think I do. Anyone know anything or have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Edit: corrected spelling

So I'm guessing no one knows if these files are needed for Win98SE? Thought I'd bump it just in case it had been missed.
