Definately what "mechBgon" said. Go there are to Panda's website to do an online scan. Also run AdAware and Spybot.

as I recall I helped a friend get rid of a virus few years ago that would not let regedit run because it would block any .exe so we had to make a copy of regedit and rename it regedit.com to get it to run and then we were able to delete the nesessary entries out of the registry that the virus put there.
there are actually four extensions one can use to run a program .exe .com .bat .pif

can't remember which virus it was maybe it will come to me in a bit.

I spent 10 hours this past weekend removing viruses, spware and malware from a friends computer. Check out here for a step by step with a bunch of free software to download and run to help with your problem. As a last step, run HijackThis. Follow the directions carefully on this one.

Someone here at the forums has a guide for this too.

You should be running Ad-Aware and Spybot in Safe Mode. I also learned from this site that there are some add-ins for both AA and Spybot that I was unaware of.

I have had good results from the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta also.

I had this problem "back in the day" while using 98. Couldn't shut down properly either.

if you got something that knocked out regedit and taskman

I'd suggest you'd run a scan from outside of your windows installation
with some sort of boot disk
otherwise you'll have a tough time getting it

I had a similar problem after installing Kerio Firewall over the weekend (on Win2K SP4) - slowed everything to a crawl, couldn't get the task manager or event viewer to come up (and when they did, it took about 5 minutes for them to open) - once I got rid of the firewall, everything worked fine again. I'm using the same firewall on my laptop (XP, SP2) with no problems.

Moral of the story - DON'T use Kerio Firewall with Win2K!

i had this problem on a couple of friends machines twice. 1st was fixed by running Mcaffe's Stinger, which can be had for free, just do a search on google.
The 2nd machine had an AIM virus which seemed to be what was causing it because I ran AIMFix, also free, and it cleared it up.
