If you haven't installed any software, it's safe to assume that any processes running are necessary.
You can trim what's running by disabling unneeded services from Services control panel, but there's about 20 (more or less, that is) processes that are a normal part of the XP OS running.
Unfortunately I have alot of things installed. I just didn't know what system files I truely needed to have running. I looked in the Services and learned alot.
