Hmmm

I'm limping along. I have 1 box assigned to both Ibercivis and Magnetism.

Some friends, who aren't so computer savvy, asked me to see what was wrong with their computer. They said that they thought they had viruses. I put the hard drive in the main machine and scanned it -- sure enough, lots of infected files. I got rid of most of them; some were in Windows\system32\ and I wasn't able to heal or remove them. I put the hard drive back in the original box and tried unsuccessfully to install a couple of different antivirus programs; it wouldn't work - the registry has been corrupted. Yep - time to reformat and reinstall windows. At least it's running well enough that I can see what the devices are - so I can collect all the necessary drivers ahead of time.

It's hard for me to understand why anyone would consider surfing the internet without antivirus installed.

What could they be thinking?!!

(Sorry for the OT - had to vent - there's bourbon in the cubbard - time for a drink)

Dam! I'm guilty of not having any antivirus installed on any of my machines. 😱

I suppose that if you have a firewall, and if you're very careful about what sites you visit, and if you don't open email from unknown sources, then you could get away with it -- but there is a free version of AVG that's pretty good. You can turn off the automatic updates and scans so that crunching is not interfered with.

I've added another box to both projects. Does anyone know if these 2 projects have implemented checkpoints?

Guilty too. My laptop (daily use machine) and work computers all have Sophos AV, but my crunching machines and my gaming machine do not have any anti-virus. Even my hackintosh has AV. Guess I should go download Sophos again...

Sorry I've not jumped on yet. I'll be moving over once I hit 500k in Aqua, I'm just a few days off hopefully.

Gives me a chance to stay ahead a little longer! 😉

I have all of my computers on Magnetism right now, but I don't know if I'll be able to leave them there. Using 340MB per process isn't normally a problem since all of the computers are set to only run BOINC when the systems are idle so they don't interfere with the people using the computers. Unfortunately, it looks like the Magnetism client is staying in memory (and reserving that 350MB of RAM) even when it's supposed to be suspended, and that will cause problems for my users. The systems have 2GB of RAM, but one of the main programs that they run uses more than 1GB by itself so I can't have BOINC stealing that much RAM when it isn't supposed to be running.

This is particularly a problem for my quad Xeon server. It is "idle" most of the time so it runs BOINC even when people are accessing databases and other services on it. This isn't normally a problem even with four BOINC clients running and using 340MB each since the server has lots of RAM. The problem is that for some reason BOINC is starting Magnetism the normal four work units, then suspends them as "Waiting for memory" and then proceeds to start another set of work units and reserves another 1360MB (340x4) for that new set of work units. The server ran out of memory very quickly even with 8GB of RAM. I'm not sure why it's doing this, but I'll have to switch my systems over to a different project if I can't get it to behave...

It may have just been a weird glitch with the first batch of work units, but Magnetism seems to be working normally now and is not staying in memory when BOINC is suspended. 🙂

Porque este proyecto está destinado a científicos españoles a que presenten proyectos para ser tratados por los usuarios de BOINC. 😉

¿Qué?

Since you asked in Spanish, I thought it would be funny to answer in Spanish...

The Ibercivis project is set up for Spanish scientists to submit research projects for processing by BOINC users. Since it is located in Spain and run by Spanish admins, they probably created the whole site in Spanish and simply forgot (or didn't want to) translate some of the menus into English.

¡Ah sí! Eso tiene sentido. Menús españoles para un proyecto español!

I have to also say that the free translators are much better today then when I was in school!

I didn't use an online translator, but I'm pretty sure I said what I meant to say. I'm a bit out of practice since I don't have anyone to talk to in Spanish except my cats, and they only speak German. 😉
