Does any of the different WCG projects yield more or less points than the others?

We have our first challenge stats update. We're currently in third place behind HardOCP and Fansub for Research, but not by much. It's an easily surmountable margin if we can get just a few more people crunching for the team!


To answer my fellow bovine (Christian), I'll go through my stats and see if I can find any one computer that has returned results for all of the WCG applications to see if any of them return more points for the same amount of work. I'm going to get some sleep now so it will have to wait for at least 8 hours, but I'll see what I can do.

Is anyone else having problems getting work right now? I was able to get some work at home this morning, but when I checked my work laptop, it is not getting any.

These are the points per hour results for my fastest machine (quad xeon). Please note that this is NOT a "scientific" result yet since it only includes about 10 work units for each of the applications (other than Conquer Cancer which only has one result right now). Also note that these are BOINC points, and not WCG points since the project web site doesn't actually list how many WCG points are awarded for the individual results - at least not that I can find.

I'll update the list again in a day or two when the system (or another computer if any of my Core Duo systems catches up with this server by then) has returned enough results to get a more accurate average on each of the projects.


Fight Aids at Home - 7.75 points per CPU hour
Human Proteome Folding - 6.57 points per CPU hour
Help Conquer Cancer - 8.03 points per CPU hour
Nutricious Rice for the World - 6.46 points per CPU hour

I have done a similar research:20-25 results in each project for different computers (12 comps). All points are the really awarded points, not the claimed points.

12.18 points/hour _________ Help Conquer Cancer
14.36 points/hour _________ Fight Aids at home
13.76 points/hour _________ Human Proteon Folding
13.55 points/hour _________ Nutricious Rice for the World

All comps run WinXP pro, SR3
All have 2 GByte RAM, AMD-processors (except one, which has a Intel Pentium 3.0 GHz), the clock goes from 1.6GHz to 3.0 GHz.

I could probably do the same report on all of my results, but I wanted to do it on just one machine to get a better comparison between the projects without skewing the results by having fast computers on some projects and slow computers on others.

Sadly, we still have a few members that are crunching under the old Anandtech team for WCG.

We're only 6285 points out of first place as of the second day race stats. That means we out-produced Fansub for Research by 100,848 points and HardOCP by 66,372 over the past 24 hours. Very nice!

I've been looking through my stats and found some interesting results. It appears that certain CPUs do better on some projects than others. For example, my Xeon server gets the most points per hour on Help Conquer Cancer while Core 2's do a little better on Nutritious Rice and regular P4's seem to get the most on Fight Aids and Human Proteome Folding. Averaging all of my systems together, the points per hour on each project are almost the same. Unless you specialize in a certain type of CPU, it might be best to just let the client get tasks from all of the projects to make sure they don't run out of work.

it seemed to me that core2 cpus get the most points from help conquer cancer and amd cpus do not too bad in rice

Hmmm, Fardringles and Philipparts findings fit very well with my experience ... and I have a mix for CPUs.
