And they'll likely settle, because the more this story is spread around, the more bad publicity they get - they certainly don't need more bad publicity.

You cannot arrest someone based on just a video tape anyways. It is required that you catch them with the stolen merchandise after they've left the store. Nothing here would have held up and no charges would have been pressed, cop or not.

I would say that it depends on where you are, the laws differ between jurisdictions.

Yep, the cop that was caught was finally charged. So this story is still pretty big here in NoVA where it happened.

I would not go back to work for them. I would sue for about 10 years of salary and benefits.

It occurs all the time in MA. News station shows thefts caught on video all the time, people identify the perp and notify police. Perp is arrested and charged.

While it is something that happens here too, we hate doing it that way because it makes theft look easy and inspires copycats. We've had a problem with police putting our videos on the news without authorization.
