That is pretty major. I have a redcard, though, 5% off on everything all the time ;)

I think the lesson everyone needs to learn is that there is no "safe" merchant for this kind of stuff. Your information at one point or another will get compromised. Keep a close eye on your credit card statements, your bank accounts, and definitely your credit record with the major credit reporting bureaus.

Just fyi:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...omer-credit-card-data-accessed_n_4471672.html

My wife has a card tied to her bank account -- I think we're going to cancel until this is at least sorted out.

Rob, what kind of card is it?

We have debit/credit cards. The only place we ever enter our PIN is at the ATM. Every other transactions are credit. From experience, when a card number is compromised, then the card is deactivated and you have to visit a branch to discuss fraudulent charges. A fraud claim is filed with the credit company the bank uses, life goes on.

In contrast, if we used the card as a debit card...then the card is deactivated and the account is frozen while the bank reviews the charges because now it's their money on the line.

Just my experience.

Thanks for the information!

Honestly, I don't know which one she has since I don't shop there...however, when she uses it, it charges her bank account maybe a day later.

I'm assuming its a red card.

Oooh, she actually has a Target card. Not sure what kind they give out. I don't have any store cards...or straight credit cards either. Only credit/debit from the bank..

Yeah, that's why we're thinking about cancelling it. Forty million is a lot of people...I'm sure she used it between those dates.

Have a Target Red Card to that is tied to or checking account. Being calling the Target 866 number and of course it is busy. Just what I need right before Christmas is to have someone drain my bank account. :(

This appears done at point of sale which means they have no way to get that info.

Most people should not worry about this. A card owner has no responsibility for bogus charges. Also your card issuer is likely to be more concerned than you and cancel a card if they feel it needed. Lastly no thief can possibly make enough purchases with this for it to affect anything but a tiny percentage of stolen numbers.

uh oh. I guess the good thing for me is that all my purchases were with a red card, so I just have to change that.

Do they not store CC info encrypted in the databases? So weird...

They sure do but if this intercepts the input early on before it is encrypted you get it in plain text. Most such grand thefts are due to a vulnerability in how the data is store. This got in front of that. It sure could be an inside job but that seems so stupid--so easy to figure out who did it.

looking at target's facebook page, there were a few comments from people that already had fraudulent charges.

And it seems that target's own credit card web site is down, so many can't even check their accounts ...

Big mess.

We went through our records and in that time period we used three different cards, including our debit card which I've largely stopped using. We merely requested new cards for each, no biggie. However, every stolen number will eventually be sold and used, so if you're in that group, call your bank and request new cards. (With new numbers, not replacement cards.)

USAA is issuing new cards automatically if you shopped during that time period. I'm going to request new cards simply because we've shopped at Target before. We've yet to see just how far down this rabbit hole goes and I figure it's not worth the hassle if we find out Target was storing everyone's credit card information and that was stolen for anyone that's ever shopped there.

My bank monitored all purchases made by me, almost in real time, until my new card arrived.

If I recall, I saw somewhere in the news that Target is offering a free credit monitoring service for 1 year. So, I assume, this is actually a good deal for consumers - free credit monitoring & fraud prevention for a year, at the expense of the minor inconvenience of getting a new card(s) issued.

Two of the three cards of mine that had been used there during the time period have been reissued. No fraudulent activity on any of them, thankfully.
