Target stores across the country are going through an electronics transition where most of the department is being re-planogramed (restocked with new items and moved around), meaning that many of the old items are being clearanced. This transition began on 4/24 and will take most stores at least a week or two to complete. There has been some talk about this over at teh hefty wallet, but nothing seems to have popped up here yet so I decided it was time for a thread. Remember that while the clearancing should be nationwide, the discount amount and which items are discounted in what order is going to be heavily YMMV based on location.
The big kahuna - Digital Cameras! The 4/24 transition also includes the removal of the glass "boat" layout in many stores, and involves a new setup with a variety of new digital cameras all around for nearly all Targets. This means that many older cameras, inlcuding display models, are being clearanced off at 30, 50, or even 70%+ off. One of the most common models reported is the Cannon S410 (4mp/3x optical/CF/etc) for $130-175, but most stores have several cameras. One store I visited today had roughly 30 display models marked down and lined up for sale, but two others had already moved out pretty much everything. If you do buy a display camera, make sure to insist that the salesperson check under the boat and/or register for bags/boxes/containers that may have missing parts - most stores do keep the accessories for display items. Also, some managers will give an additional 30% off for display items, but this is at their sole discretion, so don't count on it.
LCD TV's - While most models are still a ripoff even at 70%+ off (IMHO), some people can't get enough of these things. The cheapest I saw myself were 15" models for ~$249.
Computer items - Target is going to cary a lot more in this area (hard drives, more networking, etc) but many of the current items are being moved out. People have already reported finding 16x dvd burners for 75% off (~$24) and many Michal Graves (tacky target brand computer accessories) items for signifacnt discounts.
The other big area that seems to be hit are cordless phones - most discounts here have been in the 30-50% range at the locations i've visited, but as always, YMMV. Remember that back endcaps and lockup areas are usually where clearance items and expensive clearance items (respectively) are stored.
So if anyone decides to hit Target and check things out, report back! 😛 I made off with a ~$158 Cannon S410 and a $58 Samsung 4mp camera. Going to hit the final target in this area tomorrow and see if I have any luck.
