Suppose it's a long shot asking about tape drives in today's age. But here goes:

One company I work for has a Sony AIT tape drive in their fileserver, machine used to run linux and always worked without problem, but now the OS has been switched to Windows XP Professional. And trying to use the basic NT Backup to save not having to buy a separate software program.

I set up a daily backup schedule, but it's not working, it's not writing to the tape, a report is logged each day, but the report is completely blank. So something is happening.

Whenever I right-click on the task in the Shared Tasks folder and select 'run', the backup always runs flawlessly. Whenever I manually adjust the clock to seconds prior to the time the task begins, again the backup always runs flawlessly while I am watching the screen.

But when I leave the computer alone and come back the next day, it never backs up! I have turned off as many power management settings as I can think of. I am at a total loss by now, and the boss has been a penny-pincher lately, he's not going to be happy at all with me suggesting buying a whole new backup system, especially when everything looks like it should work just it doesn't.

Any help out there? Thanks a bunch. I also will be away for a few days so I may not get to follow up to anything for a few.

I have had similar issues, and had luck with removing the task and creating it again.
