Tapatalk

It's the other way around, the forum has to support it (by installing tapatalk support addon). At least that's how it used to be.

I don't like the new version of tapatalk, though. I'm still keeping my old paid version from a long time ago and transferred it from ROM to ROM (and to a different phone) with Titanium Backup.

it got worse and worse with every update, i stopped using it 6 months ago and just force full versions of websites everywhere

I feel the same way, except it's not worse enough to make me change yet. What pissed me off most is that I paid for it a while ago and it had no ads, but now they've done away with that all and they only offer one ad supported version. So it's like I pissed my money away.

I still use it, five years after I purchased it for $3...It's still much better than going to a desktop/mobile version of a forum.

I feel the opposite, I am glad I paid for the good version when I could so I can load it and not the new crap version on my devices.

It is ok.

Is there anyway to disable images on Tapatalk ? I don't have a very high mobile data plan.
There's a setting for slow connections but that still shows photos in posts (and you don't get any control over what constitutes a slow connection).

Tapatalk has certainly suffered from 'bloat' over the years, and I'm especially not keen on them trying to log you into everything with a Tapatalk account. That said, it's still the best option if you want to have a few forums all in one place.

I'm surprised that no ones released a lite app that uses the Tapatalk server plug in.

Look at the AT forums.

The mobile version is a bit crappy and the full version isn't formatted very well for a 5inch portrait device.

Dunno. I'm pretty happy with with the desktop layout. The only thing I'd like to change is hiding some of the subforums in the sidebar to gain more whitespace. That would make an easier target to hit, and I wouldn't end up in All Things Apple, or P&N :^D

At some point, I'll try to fix it myself in Stylish.

I definitely find the first of these easier to read.

The browser one takes a lot more panning and zooming as well. And Tapatalk has a really easy way to add images to a post.

This is what I see...

That's default, unpanned/unzoomed. I do have to zoom in sometimes to hit page links, or I end up on user profiles, or All Things Apple, but it's trivially easy, so I don't think about it. What I *don't* get is an extra layer of analytics and spying by routing my data through a third party.

Half that page is wasted space.

I agree about the tracking though.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I like having the sidebar for instant access. If I were to design it for ideal use, I'd make the sidebar editable, and floating. That way I could remove the subforums I never visit, they should all fit in my preferred landscape mode(with greater whitespace), and they'd always be visible.

Your browser doesn't have bookmarks and tabs?

Of course, but this is a lot more efficient. Fire up the app and I'm on that page, and one more tap to get to the forum I want to go showing a list of my subscribed sub-forums + participated threads. With a browser that's at least 3-4 more taps to get to the same page. Not to mention the readability issue as mentioned above, plus the wasted space.

Now, I know how you feel about your privacy, so I understand your view on this, and wouldn't argue that. Having said that, let's pretend it's completely secure, without any privacy issue whatsoever. Would you not think that this is a better quality forum experience from a mobile device?

I don't know. I've honestly never tried it. Proprietary software aside, I'm generally opposed to special purpose programs that replicate the actions of general purpose programs. I also like a consistent interface between computers. For a frame of reference the "everything is an app" approach of Android in general irritates me.

I use very few "apps" that are merely repackages of a website. One is DuckDuckGo for a newsfeed of amusing stories/pictures, and the other is Mega(one of the <handful of proprietary programs I installed) because it gives quicker access to my work files. Oh, and an xkcd app that shows comics. I should probably get rid of that one,, since I usually view them on a desktop, and it really doesn't do anything a browser doesn't do.

edit:
I saw why I have the xkcd app. It's easier to view the alt text. Firefox cuts it off after several characters. I forgot about that.

Fair enough. I'm probably the complete opposite of you. I found that I barely touched my browser anymore on my phone, and I use apps for almost all of content consumption on my phone/tablet. Tapatalk for forums, Feedly for news feeds, Fenix (twitter) for skimming through headlines, etc. There's simply no need for a browser anymore.

I also don't really care that my 'data is collected'. In fact I almost 'enjoyed' being tracked by Google, that all my searches are recorded (I like to go back sometimes and amused myself to see what I searched on a particular date), including all the voice searches (I hate that voice! why is it a lot cooler in my head), that Google Maps tracked my movement every day and I could review everything easily, etc. I know that I'm probably going to pay for this eventually, hopefully it's not too bad 😀
