Is there a proportional ratio between wearing a SPF rating, with particular UV index and how quickly you'll tan?

Same here :(

What I've figured out is you have to go out and burn basically your whole body. Then once the skin peels, you can tan that skin.

I go golden to almost what would classify me as 'black'.

Yesterday was my first real 'summer' day out in 8 hours of full sun ... no burning though.

I have the same issue with tanning, usually just burn or nothing. Though I have been at one point in my life been tan so I know it's possible.

It's not at all good for your skin, anyway. You could get a sunless tan if it's really that important to you.

Luckily I can soak up the sun until I develop melanoma without burning. :p Ahhhh, summer.

i am very pale as well, and usually burn. UNLESS i take it slowly. i.e. using a fake bake method. I start out going to the tanning place twice or three times per week at a very short time, with a good lotion. then increase it slowing and have longer sessions and go every other day.

That helps me greatly. Then when i go out into the real sun, I put an spf of about 25/35 and usually just enhance my tan and not burn!

Try it!

A good method for us vampires is to dress in all white cotton, wearing a hat and trip around all day in +30c . Those who burn easy; SPF ain't gonna help you. You gotta take your time to get a decent tan.

Great way to get skin cancer. Don't get burned to the point you peel.

Good burn = good melanoma.

Been there, done that.

Little known fact: PABA, a common sunscreen ingredient, is an amino acid and is good for you if ingested in capsule form, an hour or two before sun exposure. It can help if you miss a spot with sunscreen, and the red goes away much quicker.
